Food for the people in the area around the broken Kakhovka dam and for wounded soldiers is taken care of by an association from Lüneburg.

Lüneburg – A few days ago, the Kakhovka dam broke. Experts disagree on the reasons. The fact is, as a result, a huge area was flooded. The THW is sending 5000 water filters to the crisis area and the German Red Cross is also preparing the first aid transports from Germany. The association "Lüneburg Aid Project Ukraine" wants to start an aid transport in the direction of Ukraine on Monday. The head of the association from the heath is Ralf-Peter Oelsner, he is a family doctor from Bleckede (district of Lüneburg).

A truck drives from Lüneburg to Vinnytsia. This is a city about 180 kilometers southwest of Kiev. "From there, vans drive into the flood plain," the doctor told kreiszeitung.de. Two more transports are planned for the coming weeks. There are currently 18,000 canned fish, 4,500 cans of herring in tomato sauce, 1,000 ready meals and three tons of milk powder in storage. Oelsner: "Some of the canned fish are falsely declared, they are not allowed to be sold in Germany." The association was able to buy these cheaply. Other food was donated.

Kakhovka Dam: Help from the heath for Ukrainians

Most of the aid transports from the heath went via Vinnytsia to the areas near Kherson and Bakhmut. Due to the current situation, the next aid transport will focus on the flood area. Around 18 trillion litres dammed by the Kakhovka dam are pouring over the Dnieper region.

They always took good care of me on site.

Ralf-Peter Oelsner, Physician

Ralf-Peter Oelsner has been to Ukraine ten times since the beginning of the war. "They always took good care of me on site," he says. This time, too, the doctor will be on site. In addition to food and camp beds, medical equipment is also being transported to Ukraine again. This includes surgical equipment for the care of soldiers. "The emphasis is on hemostasis," says the doctor. Example: Removing shrapnel from the abdomen or liver is associated with a lot of blood loss. Without the help from Lüneburg, Ukrainian soldiers would have to bleed to death.

Also in the luggage: an ultrasound machine and medication for surgery. Some of the devices supplied were taken out of service in Germany. In Ukraine, they are still lifesavers. "Through close relationships, the association can provide needs-based aids," said Ralf-Peter Oelsner. The doctor maintains good contacts with his colleagues in Vinnytsia.

Why does the club from Lüneburg always go to Vinnytsia? You've been looking for a partner who makes sense. And the city ticks the boxes. She has a university hospital. There is final care for wounded soldiers on site and around 200,000 Ukrainians who have fled live there. Through local aid organizations, medical equipment also reaches the front for first aid for the soldiers. Other municipalities, such as Ottersberg, transport donations to Poland.

Even if parts of the aid supplies are donated, there are costs. Be it for the diesel, for the trucks or that some relief supplies have to be bought (at a reduced price). More than a year ago, there was a great willingness to help. But the "willingness to donate to Ukraine has declined very sharply recently," says doctor Ralf-Peter Oelsner.
