A large cloud of smoke over the Hafencity frightens many Hamburgers on Friday. The reason: a fire on a construction site. Apparently, several gas cylinders also explode, but no people are injured.
Hamburg - On a ten-storey building on a construction site in Hamburg's HafenCity, there were several explosions on Friday. Banging noises were heard, which, according to the police, came from gas cylinders. In addition, a fire broke out in the incident in the afternoon. The head of operations of the fire brigade said no people were injured. The rescuers took a crane operator to an ambulance, where he was spotted by the emergency doctor.
The police had asked residents of the Hafencity and adjacent districts to keep windows and doors closed because of the smoke. In the late afternoon, however, there was no more smoke to be seen. "The fire is out," a police spokesman confirmed. Due to the fire brigade operation, traffic on the U4 subway line was temporarily interrupted. According to the information, a shopping center is under construction at the scene of the fire.
It was only on May 25 that a fire broke out during renovation work on a house roof in Hamburg's Neustadt district. Two surrounding hotels had been evacuated. A large cloud of smoke had drifted over the city center. Dpa
