George Sand: "If we are not careful, the tree will disappear"
In 1873, the painters of Barbizon were alarmed by a cut that the State planned in the forest of Fontainebleau. George Sand supports the artists in an article published by the daily Le Temps.
"Most of the large wooded areas have tightened. Where to find the forest of the Ardennes now! The remaining forests are in a state of regulated felling and have no lasting beauty. The needs become more and more pressing, the tree, barely in its adulthood, is cut down without respect and without regret. How many admirable colossi people of my age have seen fall! There are no more, we must invent iron frames, we will soon be able to find no more beams or rafters. Everywhere the fuel is becoming more expensive and scarce. Coal is expensive too, nature is running out and the scientific industry is not finding the cure fast enough.
