Highlights: Hole in the middle of Tutzing's main road has been closed since Tuesday. The incident is now changing the approach to the rehabilitation of the local thoroughfare. Experts were initially unable to find the cause of the hole that had arisen in Tutzinger Hauptstraße. The intensive investigations, at least on Wednesday, did not reveal a cause for the hole. But the damage is now leading to a change in the planning for the entire Tutzing town centre in this area.

Tutzing – On Wednesday, there was a calm on Tutzinger Hauptstraße that is otherwise hardly known in the middle of the town center. Only a few motorists drove up to the barriers and then started irritated turning manoeuvres. Pedestrians strolled along the street, cyclists enjoyed doing laps on the unexpectedly large area. There was much more activity underground, not recognizable from the outside, because there had been a hole in the middle of the street since Tuesday. Using technically sophisticated sewer inspection methods, cameras and other special equipment examined the installations millimeter by millimeter in depth.

Nine employees of the Lake Starnberg Wastewater Association had been on the construction site, which was built at short notice, since early morning. They had cancelled their other appointments, the Tutzing hole was more important. Christoph Knobloch himself had discovered the damage. The Tutzing fire brigade commander is project manager at the wastewater association and in this function is responsible for its work on the rehabilitation of the town centre. He actually wanted to go shopping on Tuesday afternoon when he noticed a threshold-like depression in the main street. Shortly thereafter, another vehicle drove over this spot – it crashed, and the hole was there. Knobloch immediately informed the police and his colleagues from the fire department. Soon the road was closed on one side. On the other lane, traffic continued for the time being, and buses could still pass. However, it quickly became clear that a full closure was unavoidable.

The area around the junction of Greinwaldstraße became a center of attraction, more and more people followed the events, including Mayor Marlene Greinwald and the designated CSU mayoral candidate Ludwig Horn. Again and again, the bystanders expressed their appreciation for the quick reactions and the professional approach, which probably prevented worse: What would have happened in the event of a major break-in if a vehicle had been torn into the depths? Soon the Friedingen road construction and civil engineering company Strobl was also on site, where there is an emergency team for short-term operations. Some of their people also joined from the end of the day. The work continued until late in the evening, so that everything was prepared for the examinations on Wednesday.

Initially, it had been no larger than a manhole cover, but on Tuesday evening, an excavator driver had visibly carefully removed the asphalt surface all around and dug up the upper soil, creating a square field. In a half-exposed shaft, it was possible to look down five meters on Wednesday – the hole was probably already that deep on Tuesday. Two main channels are located there in the underground of the main road, one for dirty water and one for rainwater. A flushing truck of the sewage association drove close to the hole from Greinwaldstraße. The channels were flushed, the camera drove into the depths and slowly through the pipes. At the top of a car there was a monitor panel, on the screens of which the views transmitted from the underground could be followed. There are experts for such analyses: specialists in pipe, sewer and industrial service. The results so far: Both main channels are fine. It was also the turn of a rainwater sewer in the depths of Greinwaldstraße. The connections were overgrown, as it turned out, so that the drains were no longer secured – but damage that could have caused the hole was not to be discovered there either.

So it was time for further investigations. One of the experts descended through the shaft – there was a cavity down there. Next to it, the whole soil had slipped away. The intensive investigations, at least on Wednesday, did not reveal a cause for the hole. But the damage is now leading to a change in planning for the upcoming renewal of the entire Tutzing town centre in this area. The rehabilitation of the rainwater sewer system is actually planned on several sections of the main road "trenchless" by inserting a resin-impregnated, glass-fibre reinforced plastic hose ("GRP hose") into the sewer and curing it by means of UV radiation. But because of the hole that has now been created, there is now a shaft renewal instead. "We have to uncover the whole shaft anyway," says Knobloch. The new shaft has been ordered, it should be on the construction site on Wednesday, then its installation is also planned. If everything works out, everything could be ready by the end of next week. Then the main road could be passable again – with reservations.
