Podemos takes the negotiation with Sumar to the limit

Highlights: Last 24 hours of a negotiation against the clock between the Executive of the formation of Ione Belarra and the team of Vice President Yolanda Díaz. The deadline to decide whether to compete in coalition to the general elections of 23-J expires before midnight this Friday. The main stumbling blocks are in the number of starting positions in the lists for Podemos and the presence or not of the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, on the ballot for Madrid. Sumar sources say they "do not contemplate" this option and some actors in the negotiations interpret the movement as an attempt to "raise tension"

The formation of Belarra proposes at the last minute to present itself alone in the Valencian Community and the platform of Yolanda Díaz does not contemplate it. The keys to the pact: the starting positions on the lists and the presence or not of the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero

The left to the left of the PSOE, that political space that for years occupied almost alone United Left, then expanded Podemos and now seeks to make a new electoral leap – or avoid a hard setback – with the brand Sumar, has this Friday an unavoidable appointment: the last 24 hours of a negotiation against the clock between the Executive of the formation of Ione Belarra and the team of Vice President Yolanda Díaz. The deadline to decide whether to compete in coalition to the general elections of 23-J expires before midnight this Friday and everything is up in the air. The main stumbling blocks are in the number of starting positions in the lists for Podemos and the presence or not of the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, on the ballot for Madrid.

Late in the afternoon, the party leadership again took the negotiation to the limit by dropping with a proposal to run alone in the three constituencies of the Valencian Community and with Sumar in the rest of the country. Sources of the formation argue that they seek to "unclog the situation in that territory", and circumvent the "vetoes" that, they denounce, are imposed on the party from Compromís, as ElDiario.es advanced and has been able to confirm EL PAÍS. Sumar sources say that they "do not contemplate" this option and some actors in the negotiations interpret the movement as an attempt to "raise tension" and try to get better positions on the lists.

Around ten o'clock on Thursday night, Compromís has announced a preliminary agreement with Sumar to attend together the next elections of 23-J. The negotiation will mean, among other things, that the Valencianistas head the list for Valencia, which was one of the most discussed. The conditions of the agreement must still go through an executive of Compromís and the addresses of each of the three formations that make up the coalition (Més in the National Council, Initiative in the National Table and Verds-Equo in the Country Table). In addition, a telematic voting period will be opened for five hours for the militants to decide on the agreement, reports María Fabra.

Belarra announced on Thursday at the end of the morning an express consultation to the bases in which he demands that they support the negotiation opened nine days before and allow the leadership to decide if there will be an electoral agreement with the new platform. The limit for these votes, obligatory according to the statutes of the formation, ends at ten in the morning. The endorsement of the militancy would legitimize the leaders to close a pact, after days of pressure from the territories in favor of unity. But it also empowers management to do otherwise. The question, in any case, does not refer to the convenience or not of this confluence and leaves the final resolution in the hands of the Executive. Several leaders have been in favor of the coalition in their public messages of the last hours, from Belarra herself to the national co-spokesperson Javier Sánchez Serna.

The leadership of Podemos launches an express consultation to its bases to have full powers over the decision of the agreement with Sumar

"Immersed in a reactionary wave of international dimension, there is a difficult, but real, possibility of revalidating the coalition government and opting for a second legislature that allows us to deepen social and feminist transformations. That possibility depends on the political forces grouped in Sumar and Podemos presenting themselves in a single candidacy for the general elections, "expressly recognizes the general secretary of Podemos in a video broadcast on social networks. "The negotiations are not being simple and that is why I want to ask for your support so that it is the Coordination Council of Podemos who negotiates and, where appropriate, reaches the electoral agreement of unity with Sumar," he adds. "The unity agreement between Podemos and Sumar is close. But there are very few hours left and we need the leadership to have a democratic endorsement to finish closing it, "said Sánchez Serna.

The negotiations led by Díaz's chief of staff, Josep Vendrell, have continued throughout Thursday and have already achieved adhesions such as Más Madrid, Chunta Aragonesista, Iniciativa del Pueblo Andaluz, AraMés, Batzarre and Verdes Equo, although the final agreement is yet to be defined. The cascade of agreements puts more pressure on a national executive of Podemos that has more and more pressure from the territories. The addresses of the Balearic Islands, Galicia, Asturias, the Canary Islands, Extremadura or Navarra were joined on Thursday by the voice of the coordinator of Aragon, Maru Díaz, or the publication of a manifesto signed by a group of leaders of Podemos in Catalonia that calls for unity and the same candidacy with Sumar. The acting counselor has advanced that she will not collect the act of deputy and that she will leave her position after the generals. In that community, Podemos has gone from having five deputies in the last legislature to one. "Now, more than ever, high-mindedness, generosity and humility are crucial to preserving the coalition government," he said in a broad statement.

The consultation of the bases of Podemos and the votes in other parties delay the signing of the agreement. In Sumar they repeat that in no case will it be reached on the bell and mark a lot of distance with what happened a year ago in Andalusia, when the deadlines to form a left-wing coalition were so rushed that those of Belarra ended up out of the official register and that resulted in a cross of accusations that weighed down the brand since its birth. On this occasion the meetings have been constant and intense, they defend, and the difficulty to agree on almost fifteen formations is immense.

The main problem for Podemos was in the last hours the number of positions on the lists and the inclusion of Montero for Madrid, where Yolanda Díaz herself, someone from her new party, Más Madrid and Izquierda Unida, must also be. The number of deputies with options to have a seat is limited and the preparation of this ballot is one of the most complex. The controversy over the presence of the head of Equality also occurs in a particularly hard week for the number two of Podemos, but also for her party, with two blows to the law of only yes is yes, the star norm of the department of Montero and that opened the worst crisis in the coalition at the end of last year. If on Tuesday the UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls reproached Spain for the errors of the text and pointed out that the unwanted reduction of sentences – already more than a thousand – "could have been avoided if more attention had been paid to the voices of the different interested parties", on Wednesday the Supreme Court endorsed these reductions of sentences. There are only a few hours left and uncertainty remains maximum, with proposals that may change the final map of the agreement before the bases are even pronounced.
