A rather insignificant-looking old bridge over the Wörthersbach west of the Maria-Aich-Kirche is currently occupying local politics. The crossing is dilapidated and needs to be replaced. The problem is that the plan variants presented by the town hall administration are extremely expensive.
Peißenberg – If you drive east on Aichstraße, you will hardly notice it – the dirt road that branches off to the north in front of the residential buildings at the Maria-Aich-Kirche and leads to a crossing over the Wörthersbach.
It's a bridge to nowhere
It's a bridge to nowhere. More precisely, to the fields and fields bordered by the Stammerbach in a semicircle. The owner of the bridge is the municipality – and they now have a problem. "The bridge doesn't just look bad, it is. It is in a desolate condition," reported town hall employee Sonja Mayer at the most recent meeting of the building committee.
Renovation is out of the question due to the massive damage. Mayer therefore presented four variants to the committee, namely a new replacement building on site, a pipe culvert with a dam, a prefabricated component with a grating and a ford modelled into the terrain.
Why spend a lot of money on a crossing?
The costs ranged from 115,000 euros (for the ford) to 250,000 euros (for a new bridge). But why spend so much money on a crossing that leads nowhere? "The costs are insane – for all variants," stated Anton Höck (Peißenberger Liste).
However, Mayer pointed out in committee that the bridge cannot be abandoned. The agricultural land north of the Wörthersbach would have to remain accessible to the tenant. But the bridge is also urgently needed for the market.
Ecological expansion also
What Meyer was aiming for: In the course of the flood protection measures on the local streams, ecological expansions will be carried out on the Stammer and Fendterbach streams in addition to the technical ones. "The only access road to the future water construction site and to the permanent water maintenance is via the Wörthersbach near Maria Aich," Mayer explained.

The town hall administration would favor the ford variant because it is "not an engineering structure" and the "most economical solution". However, there was opposition in the committee. It was argued that, in addition to the danger of water pollution from the crossing agricultural machinery vehicles, the ford would unnecessarily consume agricultural land. There were also fears of a deterioration in the situation in the event of flooding. "The water accumulates at the ford. Then the residents in the Iblherstraße drunk us mercilessly," said Jürgen Forstner (Free Voters).
Ford allegedly improves flood situation
Mayer disagreed: The ford would even improve the flood situation, which had also been proven in hydraulic calculations. The water management office and the lower nature conservation authority have already approved the ford variant.
In the end, the ford was also preferred in the committee with 7:4 votes, because it is the cheapest variant: "If we have the chance to spend less money, then that is the only alternative," said Bernd Schewe (SPD).
But the vote of the preparatory committee is merely a proposal for a resolution for the large plenary session in the Market Council – and the topic has not yet been discussed there. The reason: In the committee, Jürgen Forstner, among others, questioned whether the crossing over the Wörthersbach – agricultural traffic or construction site and maintenance traffic through the building yard or not – was actually needed.
Access also via farmstead?
An access road without crossing a stream would also be possible via a farmstead on Iblherstraße – at least theoretically. According to reports, the municipality has already held talks with the farm owner. No agreement was reached. Now it is to be negotiated again – and then a final decision on the dilapidated bridge will be made in the market council.
