Update from June 9, 10:40 a.m.: In the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia, there were clashes between Russian and Ukrainian formations on Friday (9 June), according to Russian sources. Fighting is currently underway in the area between Orekhovo and Tokmak, a representative of the Russian occupation authorities, Vladimir Rogov, said on the Telegram online service.

Russian conflict correspondent Alexander Sladkov reported on Telegram of "intense fighting" in the area. "The enemy is making incredible efforts, attacks. In vain. Our forces hold out. The front line is stable," he wrote.

Initially, the information could not be independently verified. In an entry on the online network Facebook, the Ukrainian army only announced that "the enemy in Zaporizhzhia remains on the defensive". It said it had destroyed four missiles and ten of around 20 drones fired by Russia at "military installations and critical infrastructure."

Fighting in the Belgorod region: Russia reports night attacks

Update from June 9, 9:40 a.m.: In the Russian border region of Belgorod, which has been shelled by the Ukrainian side for days, authorities reported renewed nightly attacks on Friday morning (9 June). He spoke of a total of three injured. The city of Shebekino was also shelled again, residential buildings were destroyed. But inspections there are currently not possible because of the shelling, he said.

Russia began its war of aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, bringing death and destruction to the country and occupying numerous territories. Ukraine has held out the prospect of a major offensive with Western military aid to liberate its territories, including the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. The fighting had intensified significantly in recent days. Russian border regions such as Belgorod, Kursk and Bryansk also complained of increased shelling. Officially, however, Kiev has not yet confirmed the start of the large-scale offensive.

Ukraine war: ISW sees more fighting on different sectors of the front

The US Institute for the Study of War (ISW) says it has observed an increase in combat operations between Russia and Ukraine on various sectors of the front. Ukraine is likely to make limited land gains despite Russia's claims to the contrary, the institute said in a report. At the same time, the Washington-based ISW stressed that it does not want to speculate at this stage on whether or not these gains could be part of a widely expected major counteroffensive by Kiev.

A successful counteroffensive could take days, weeks or even months before its effect is fully apparent, the ISW wrote. Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia's attack since February 24, 2022.

Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said on Monday in her Telegram channel that the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, which has been embattled for months and is now under Russian occupation, is the central scene of the current fighting. In the region there, the Ukrainian army is conducting several offensive actions. According to Malyar, there is also local fighting in the south of the country. There, the enemy forces also went over to defense. In most cases, the information provided by the warring parties cannot be directly independently verified. (with agency material)
