After throwing an explosive object at a mourning community in Altbach (Esslingen district) with five injured, the suspect is not capable of being questioned. The 23-year-old was seriously injured and is being treated in a clinic, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office said on Saturday. Mourners had chased the young man after the attack and beaten him so badly that he was flown to the hospital.
Altbach - Up to 500 people gathered, according to investigators, on Friday afternoon for the funeral of a 20-year-old man. The suspect is said to have approached the mourning congregation and thrown an initially unknown object into the crowd. Five visitors were treated in hospital. According to security sources, the mourners suffered "burn and shrapnel injuries".
The investigators assume a lone perpetrator. Nevertheless, witness statements on other suspects would be checked, said the spokesman for the prosecutor's office. The background to the attack is completely unclear. Since the police do not rule out connections with a series of shots in Baden-Württemberg, the State Criminal Police Office took over the investigation. They will examine possible connections, said a spokesman.
The 20-year-old man, who was buried, died in a train accident a week ago. The police rule out third-party negligence. Candles, photos and flowers were placed at the train station in Altbach. Dpa
