A snowslide caught a mountaineer on the Zugspitze and swept him away. Eleven other climbers noticed the accident and also had to be rescued.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen – A snowslide near the summit of the Zugspitze near Garmisch-Partenkirchen swept away a previously unknown mountaineer. The man fell 400 meters deep, rescue workers could only determine his death.
Snow slide on Zugspitze: mountaineer falls to his death
According to the police, the accident occurred on Friday afternoon, June 9, around 14 p.m. Eyewitnesses had noticed the accident and reported that the man was alone on the Höllental via ferrata. Shortly below the Zugspitze summit, he was caught by a small snow slide and torn to his death.
The hitherto unknown mountaineer fell 400 meters over the steepest rocky terrain before he came to rest fatally injured on the Höllentalferner below. The alarmed rescue workers could only determine the death of the man.
Rescued by helicopter: Eleven mountaineers witness misfortune
Eleven other mountaineers, who were also on the Höllental via ferrata and noticed the accident, had to be rescued by helicopters. Investigations into the cause of the accident and the identity of the deceased are ongoing. Third-party fault is currently not assumed.
The police warn of further snow slides in the coming days and weeks. Such departures are not uncommon due to the current weather in the summit regions.
