Ted Kaczynski, who sent explosive letters across the United States, died in prison at the age of 81, prison authorities said Saturday. Kaczynski, nicknamed "Unabomber," killed three people and wounded 23 others during his terror campaign from 1978 to 1995, when he was caught in a cabin in Montana.
He was exposed only after The New York Times and The Washington Post, on the recommendation of the FBI, agreed to his request to publish his radical manifesto against modern society, after promising that he would then stop sending explosive letters. Those who recognized by whom the words were written were his brother and wife, who recognized his hostile tone. In 1996, after confessing to his crimes, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole and held in high-security detention facilities.
