Wiesbaden – Summer has arrived in full force, even though it hasn't even started yet. As meteorologist and weather expert Dominik Jung of wetter.net explains in a press release, temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius were already measured on Thursday. In the east, as well as in the south and in the west, temperatures have already exceeded the 30 mark. In the north, on the other hand, temperatures were just below in many places. Especially in view of the trend of the next few days, drought is currently an "extreme problem".

"Extreme weather has returned": Drought spreads in Germany – with the highest risk of forest fires

According to Jung, Germany must continue to prepare for an extremely dry period: "We are on the threshold of another drought summer," explains the meteorologist. "This can be seen quickly with a glance at the official forest fire danger map of the German Weather Service". According to this, the entire map of the Federal Republic of Germany is colored dark red, i.e. the highest risk of forest fires.

"Extreme weather has once again arrived in Germany," explains Jung, explaining that after the changeable and cool summer, the other weather extreme is now here. "The drought and warmth is spreading unhindered". The latest long-term forecasts also agree on this. Accordingly, June and July are expected to be extremely dry in large parts of Germany. In addition, the summer would be warmer than the long-term climate average.

What will the weather be like in Germany in the coming days?

  • Saturday: 24 to 33 degrees, sun and heat
  • Sunday: 25 to 33 degrees, lots of sunshine and dry
  • Monday: 23 to 30 degrees, dry and warm in summer
  • Tuesday: 23 to 30 degrees, mostly dry and sunshine
  • Wednesday: 18 to 27 degrees, a low pressure system is coming from the east, some rain there, otherwise dry
  • Thursday: 16 to 26 degrees, mix of sun and clouds, partly showers and thunderstorms
  • Friday: 15 to 25 degrees, partly sunshine, partly cloudy, especially to the east some rain

Expert warns of the first heat wave of the year in Germany - "Weather extremes are increasing"

"In Germany, we are now expecting several hot days in a row, the first heat wave of the year is imminent." Meteorologists would speak of a heat wave as soon as it was warmer than 30 degrees for three days in a row. "This is exactly what will happen in Germany, but the rain will still be mostly absent." In some regions in Germany, not a single drop of rain has fallen since the beginning of May.

The effects this can have were recently shown by a large-scale operation by the fire brigade in Brandenburg, where a forest fire broke out in an area contaminated with ammunition. Looking at the world, the forest fires in Canada are also taking center stage, which is why a thick smoke is currently settling over New York and the population should not go outside. Meteorologist Jung explains: "Due to climate change, weather extremes are also increasing in Germany."
