"His project bold, his construction daring" - Ernst Lehmann (67) from Switzerland cycles to the North Cape with a self-made vehicle.
Peiting – At the fountain on the main square in Peiting, it catches the eye: You want to photograph the bicycle vehicle, which at first glance seems curious. The cyclist himself gives the green light. So a quick press on the shutter button of the camera before he changes his mind.
You don't have to ask the cyclist about his origins: the Swiss dialect is unmistakable. At this moment, however, it is more interested in the vehicle than in the herbal pills with which the Swiss came to Peiting. "Everything to do with the frame of the sturdy bike is self-construction and self-construction," says Ernst Lehmann. Some parts, such as mirror mount and other auxiliary supports, come from the 3D printer. Always adapted to the body size.
The welds of the stainless steel of his trailer are impressive. Quasi home advantage for Lehmann, who has enough experience as a mechanical engineer. But now he is retired and wants to talk about his project.
(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.)
Photovoltaic panel for electricity and protection
However, he must first reveal the construction with the photovoltaic panel. Because it kills two birds with one stone: In a horizontal position in the sunshine, the plate generates electricity, which is fed directly into the battery via a charge controller. When it rains, the plate protects his mobile household from moisture.
If Lehmann has to plunder his supplies or prepare his bedchamber, he lifts the plate into a vertical position. Directed against the sun, it continues to generate electricity. Really impressive.
Cycled 400 kilometers to Peiting - but it goes even further
But now to Lehmann's plans: He comes from Zetzwil in the Swiss canton of Aargau, from where he started. He has already cycled almost 400 kilometres down to Peiting. He continues in the direction of Munich, where he wants to spend the night on a campsite, but above all take a shower. "From there, it's easy to go north, where I want to reach the North Cape at the end," he explains succinctly. And he adds that he wants to be back in the fall.

What is striking about Lehmann's vehicle is the hard-looking leather saddle from an earlier generation, which does not seem to be exactly comfortable. "I need about 1000 kilometers, then my butt has shaped it and I got used to it," is the casual comment with which Ernst Lehmann says goodbye to Peiting. Whereby he has chosen a more hearty expression for butt - in "Schwyzerdütsch", of course.
