The Green Youth and the Young Socialists in the district of Freising pitched tents on Freising's Marienplatz on Friday afternoon. In doing so, they wanted to draw attention to an important issue.

Freising – Four tents, a few cardboard signs on which they had written the message of the afternoon in large colorful letters, folding chairs, cold drinks, sunscreen: In addition, about 15 young people from the Green Youth and the Jusos, who wanted to draw the attention of passers-by on Marienplatz to the topic of "affordable housing" for three hours on Friday afternoon. "We want to shake things up, show how important affordable housing is," said Green City Councillor Nico Heitz. It belongs in the consciousness of the public – and in the consciousness of city and district politics. "The issue of affordable housing must remain its top priority, even in view of Freising's tight budget situation." Heitz made this demand yesterday to the Freising city councillors.

In Freising, there is certainly money for projects that clearly have to be placed behind the important topic of housing in their priority – Heitz is thinking, for example, of the construction of large multi-storey car parks or the Domberg elevator. "Housing is a fundamental right and must not continue to become a luxury good," said Andreas Hauner of the Green Youth, who organized the tent protest together with Michael Firlus of the Young Socialists. The two emphasized that it is not only about social housing, but about making the topic of housing search generally easier for everyone. Firlus, who is a member of the municipal council in Kirchdorf, would also like to see more decision-making power for the municipalities. After all, where a rural community can intervene positively in what is happening, it does so – keyword densification.

And the fact that the issue is really acute among the people of Freising was shown by the interest of passers-by. Of course, there were some who, without even bothering to read the messages on the signs or to seek conversation, scolded themselves as they passed by, "they'd better do some work." But at the end of the three hours, there were only a few who nagged. Most of them were interested, many even reported on their own housing misery in which they are currently mired: students who are urgently looking for an affordable room. Seniors who lacked a housing situation appropriate to their age.

At the end of the three hours, when all the cold drinks were empty and the tents were slowly packed up again, Nico Heitz summed it up like this: "We are absolutely satisfied and have seen how important it is to stay tuned to the topic – and we will do that." A first step has been taken.
