Once again, activists of the "Last Generation" are spraying other people's buildings with paint in the name of climate protection. A resident on Sylt has now turned the tables.

Sylt – Climate activists of the "Last Generation" sprayed paint on luxury shops on Sylt on Friday (16 June). This is not the first time that the group has smeared other people's property in the name of climate protection. The members also do not stop at expensive art paintings in their protest, for example last autumn they soiled an exhibit by Monet with mashed potatoes.

On the popular German holiday island, the activists have also become conspicuous several times. First, a paint attack was directed against private jets at the Sylt airport, then they took on a luxury bar and finally they hijacked a golf course and declared it a nature reserve on their own authority.

An islander now seems to be fed up with the protests – and turns the tables without further ado. During the paint attacks on the boutique Gallery Michael Meyer and the high-end jeweller Wempe on the luxury mile Störnwai in Kampen, a passer-by pulls out a spray can and sprays the climate activists with green paint.

The action of the "Last Generation" attracted the attention of many holidaymakers and Sylters, most of whom were annoyed. Some are said to have verbally attacked them, and according to the police in Schleswig-Holstein, there were also fisticuffs. Displeasure of angry motorists and passers-by towards members of the activist group is making the rounds on the Internet again and again, most recently the state also took action against the "last generation" with a major raid.

Island ban for climate activists: Paint attack on Sylt applies to the super-rich and has consequences

For the activists, the latest paint attack has an aftermath: not only were they ultimately soiled with paint themselves, but the authorities have now banned the rioters from the island for at least two weeks, according to information from 24hamburg.de. According to the police, six people aged 21 and 63 were taken into custody, five of whom could be associated with other actions and vandalism.

The color attack on the high-end boutique can certainly be understood as part of the group's new strategy to target its actions in the summer of 2023 against the rich. "The super-rich are disproportionately responsible for the fact that our basic food stores are destroyed," said one of the activists on the ground to the German Press Agency. "The richest one percent of Germans emit almost 10 times as much CO₂ as average citizens," reads a tweet from the "Last Generation" on the background of the color attack.

In addition to numerous users in the social networks, there is also criticism from politicians. "The state parliament resolutely rejects criminal actions of the last generation," announced the state parliament of Schleswig-Holstein. The actions of the "Last Generation" have reached a new dimension through "the targeted damage to private individuals". (Romina Kunze)
