Climate glue and activists of the "Last Generation" have been causing a stir for months. The spokeswoman finds the wiretapping operation of Bavarian investigators "disturbing".
Munich – For months, the "Last Generation" has been keeping the public in suspense, and activists' actions have repeatedly caused a stir. After the headlines of Saturday (June 24, 2023) and the wiretapping operation by Bavarian investigators, the movement's spokeswoman, Carla Hinrichs, is now speaking out.
Spokeswoman for the "Last Generation" calls wiretapping "disturbing"
The fact that private telephone conversations had also been listened to and recorded was "disturbing," Hinrichs said on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Greens criticized the fact that conversations with journalists were apparently also overheard. The German police union, on the other hand, called the surveillance "legally impeccable". Just a few days ago, Hinrichs spoke in a TV report about how stressful the protest actions were.
The Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on Saturday that Bavarian investigative authorities had been listening to telephone conversations of climate activists of the "Last Generation" for months. They also obtained permits to determine the location data of mobile phones, to listen to the mailboxes of activists and to read their e-mails "in real time". Accordingly, a landline with a Berlin area code, which the "Last Generation" issues as its official press phone, was also affected. The background to this is the suspicion of the formation of a criminal organization.
"Last Generation" activist finds measures taken "absurd and frightening"
The activist Imke Bludszuweit, who may also have been affected, called it "absurd and frightening what guns are being brought out here to suppress peaceful protest". The "Last Generation", which had come under increasing criticism for its blockade actions in recent months, said in a statement that it was unclear whether the surveillance would continue. Regardless of the crackdown on the movement, the group will "continue to take its protest to the streets throughout Germany next week."
Left Party parliamentary group leader Dietmar Bartsch called the wiretapping operation of the Bavarian Attorney General's Office "completely inappropriate". The incident shows "that it is wrong that prosecutors are politically bound by instructions," Bartsch said via Twitter. They would be "abused in an indecent election campaign".
"Raises questions about proportionality": wiretapping at "Last Generation" causes criticism
"The entire procedure raises questions about proportionality," SPD member of parliament Lars Castellucci told the Tagesspiegel on Sunday. "Concerns about a radicalization of climate protest must be taken seriously." However, the criminal offence of forming a criminal organisation should "not be an invitation to proceed in the first place to drive the accused into radicalism".

Activists of the "Last Generation" always cause a stir
The activists of the "Last Generation" regularly glue themselves to roads, blocking traffic or smearing works of art to draw attention to their demands. According to Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), 580 crimes since the beginning of 2022 were assigned to the group at the beginning of June. The main focus was on coercion and damage to property.
Spokeswoman Carla Hinrichs herself glued herself to the street again shortly after a verdict. Only recently, activists had made headlines with a color campaign on Sylt, in winter the climate stickers even targeted the Christmas tree at the Brandenburg Gate.
