Ex-racing driver Ralf Schumacher condemned the color attacks of the climate activists. Now he adds: It is a "task for society as a whole to stop this kind of protest".

Munich – For weeks, activists of the "Last Generation" have been roaming around on Sylt and smearing other people's property in the name of the climate. In an effort to intensify their protests against rich people, the climate activists sprayed a private jet at the beginning of June, followed shortly afterwards by a paint attack in a luxury hotel and then misappropriated a golf course on the German holiday island.

Most recently, their rain of color hit a luxury boutique on Sylt; an action that caused some tempers to boil over. And also drew prominent criticism: Ex-racing driver Ralf Schumacher was outraged by the color attack in an Instagram post and also took Carla Hinrichs as one of the group's best-known climate activists in his criticism.

His opinion on the actions of the "Last Generation" seems unchanged. Even a few days later, he can't get anything good out of the actions and reinforces the criticism in another Instagram post – and followed up again.

"Violence and destruction": Schumacher for climate protection, but condemns actions of the "last generation"

What happened? With fire extinguishers, six climate activists sprayed the noble designer shop including the jeweler in orange paint and sent a message to Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on a banner. This is said to have led to hostility between climate activists and passers-by. A local resident unceremoniously turned the tables and sprayed the members of the "Last Activists" himself with a spray paint can.

Ralf Schumacher published a video recording of the scene on his Instagram account along with the following words: "It's unbelievable what's going on with us now! Yesterday on Sylt. I can only hope that tougher action will finally be taken." He himself was not there, as he clarified afterwards. Otherwise, he would have "certainly shown a little more moral courage to prevent these people" from the color action. He wrote this in another Instagram post.

The former professional athlete admitted that climate protection was important. But the approach of the "last generation" is the wrong way to do this. "I believe that we have all understood how important the climate and nature are," Schumacher writes. However, campaigning for climate protection should have nothing to do with "violence and destruction".

Ex-racing driver calls for more moral courage in the face of color attacks by climate activists – and receives encouragement

And with the criticism of the actions not enough. "I see it as a task for society as a whole to stop this kind of protest," says Schumacher, earning encouragement from several Instagram users. "Yes, something has to be done. Yes, humanity needs a wake-up call. But this path does not lead any further," comments one.

Another partly agrees with the words of the ex-racing driver: "I dare to doubt that everyone understood. But the actions of the 'Last Generation' will certainly not provide more understanding." Among the comments are also supporters of the climate protests.

It is not uncommon for the activists' protests to meet with headwinds. Mostly, however, by angry drivers or pedestrians. So far, there has hardly been anything to be heard from the celebrity world, but from politics. Chancellor Scholz acknowledged the actions with the word "crazy", even Green politician Robert Habeck distances himself from the "last generation".
