Highlights: The prefecture of Val-d'Oise "considers" the ban of the march planned Saturday for the seven years of the death of Adama Traoré. The 24-year-old black man died in the courtyard of the Persian barracks, about thirty kilometers north of Paris, shortly after his arrest by gendarmes. The state services are concerned about the arrival of "disruptive elements" at this demonstration, which could also be attended by Nahel's mother.

Due to the violent riots in recent days, the prefect announced the possible cancellation of the event.

The prefecture of Val-d'Oise "considers" the ban of the march planned Saturday for the seven years of the death of Adama Traoré, a young black man who died during an arrest in 2016 and erected as an emblem of police violence, in the context of riots following the death of Nahel, it announced Thursday.

On July 19, 2016, this 24-year-old black man died in the courtyard of the Persian barracks, about thirty kilometers north of Paris, shortly after his arrest by gendarmes at the end of a chase.

'Disruptive elements'

Led by his sister Assa Traoré, the collective "Truth for Adama" holds every year in July a peaceful march in Persan and Beaumont-sur-Oise to demand the indictment of the four gendarmes involved, and more broadly denounce police violence. "Given the violence that occurred in the past days and faced with the risk of excesses and disturbances to public order that the event may cause, the prefect has informed the Truth for Adama committee that he plans to ban the march," tweeted the prefecture of Val-d'Oise.

In their letter to the organizers of the march, the state services are concerned about the arrival of "disruptive elements" at this demonstration, which could also be attended by Nahel's mother. "This march is likely to stir up tensions and generate serious disturbances to public order," wrote the prefect Philippe Court, giving the organizers until Friday noon to formulate their observations.

The death of Adama Traoré had given rise to several nights of riots through the neighboring communes of Persan and Beaumont-sur-Oise. In recent days, the town hall of Persan burned during urban violence. Every year, the procession of the memorial march for Adama Traoré strolls through these two cities in a militant atmosphere but without incident, ending with a rap concert in a park. Many trade unions, organisations and political parties are expected this year. "This is a political decision to prevent there being a word from the popular neighborhoods on the death of Nahel and Adama," Youcef Brakni, Assa Traoré's right-hand man, told AFP, castigating "a desire to censor freedom of peaceful expression".
