Pope Francis decided at the last minute not to read the speech he had prepared and the Vatican had to leave to clarify why he did it.

Highlights: Pope Francis did not read his speech to the faithful at the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal. The pontiff said he did not want to force his way through the speech. The pope is in Portugal as part of the World Youth Day celebrations. He is expected to return to the U.S. after the event, where he will meet with members of Congress and other dignitaries. He will also meet with the leaders of the European Union, the United Nations and the European Council of Ministers.

It is the third time he has done so in his visit to Portugal and the situation raised doubts about the health of the Supreme Pontiff and a possible problem in the eyesight.

The pope preferred to improvise and not read the speech he had prepared today at the shrine of Fatima, in Portugal, by his own decision, "as a pastor before the faithful before him," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni clarified, after Francis skipped, again, what he had written to speak without papers to his followers.

"The pope decides to change his speech as pastor to the faithful in front of him," explained Bruni, who clarified that it is not a vision problem.

He added that in the parish house of Serafina in Lisbon he also did not conclude his message because "there was no good lighting" and, as the pontiff himself explained, he did not want to force the view.

Since his arrival in Lisbon on Wednesday to participate in World Youth Day (WYD), the pope has preferred to skip or not read the speeches prepared on three occasions, including the viacrucis of this Friday, while today he did not read the prayer to the Virgin that was planned and in which a request for peace was expected.

However, Bruni stressed that he prayed for peace in the fourth mystery of the rosary that he prayed with sick young people and some inmates and that the planned prayer was replaced by a Hail Mary.

Francis arrived by popemobile at the esplanade of the shrine where he was received by 200,000 people, mainly Portuguese faithful, many families who passed their children to the pontiff to be blessed, and who had spent the night here.

After praying the rosary seated in front of the image of Fatima with six inmates from various Portuguese prisons and 102 sick young people, seated in the first rows of the chapel where Catholic tradition indicates that the apparitions to Sister Lucia and her two cousins, Jacinta and Francisco, took place, the pope gave an impromptu speech in which he asked the Virgin: Mother, what are you pointing out to me, what is it that worries you?

The apparitions of Fatima are closely linked to the pontificates and conflicts, since as Sister Lucia revealed many years later, Our Lady announced to them the end of World War I, the beginning of World War II and asked for the "conversion" of Russia.
