The "Last Generation" plans to paralyze Munich in the coming weeks. In Regensburg, they have already blocked a BMW plant in recent days.

Munich – The "Last Generation" is moving on to the Bavarian capital after their protests in Regensburg. Starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2023, roads are to be blocked everywhere in Munich.

"Last generation" protests for climate protection

"We will make Munich a protest stronghold for weeks and thus bring the breach of the constitution of the federal government into the public eye," announced the "Last Generation" in a press release. According to the climate activists, this is necessary because "the federal government is exposing the population to the climate catastrophe without protection." Bavaria was chosen as the destination because the constitution was written there 75 years ago. In 1994, environmental protection was also included as a state goal.

Already on the Sunday before the start of the protests, the "Last Generation" confronted the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder during a bicycle tour. There were also protests in Nuremberg, where a demonstrator was taken to the police station, according to the "Last Generation". After her release, Lilly Gomez said: "We will continue to stand up for our fundamental rights. Where and when we protest should not be a secret that the Office for the Protection of the Constitution has to buy from me. We protest because it is necessary, where it is necessary."

"Last generation" wants to paralyze Munich before the IAA

Above all, demonstrations are to be held against the International Motor Show (IAA). It will be opened by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on 5 September. Actions against the auto show run under the motto "#blockIAA" and are carried out by the action alliances "Sand im Getriebe", "No Future for IAA" and "SmashIAA". The "Last Generation" was already blocking the BMW plant in Regensburg when they glued themselves to the ground in front of it. However, production was not disrupted, as the plant was on vacation.

The protests carried out in Regensburg, which took place on many streets, were intended to give a taste of what to expect in Munich from Thursday, the group said. Exact locations of the protest in Munich have not yet been announced, so traffic jams must be expected throughout Munich for weeks. In the next two weeks, it is therefore recommended to switch to public transport or bicycles. Meanwhile, the Munich police announced that they would increase their presence in the city. (RD with dpa
