Highlights: Activists of the climate group "Last Generation" block roads, whereupon frustrated motorists lend a hand and pull the protesters aside. Recently, the activists have increasingly been physically attacked by motorists, and in some cases the frustration has already been discharged into criminal acts. Around 40 people were involved in the blockades on three streets in Regensburg, a police spokeswoman said. Of the twelve activists who blocked roads on Monday, five were released shortly after by police. Seven, however, had to spend the night in preventive detention, which is only possible in Bavaria.

At a protest of the "Last Generation", the anger of the motorists was directed against a wheelchair user and a cameraman, among others.

Regensburg – For months, activists of the "Last Generation" have been protesting with sit-ins in traffic. In doing so, they want to put pressure on the government to react more specifically to climate change and its consequences and to meet the previously agreed targets. Recently, the activists have increasingly been physically attacked by motorists, and in some cases the frustration has already been discharged into criminal acts. During such a blockade in Regensburg on Monday, August 21, there were again unpleasant scenes.

"Last generation" blocks road in Regensburg – motorists freak out

These are scenes that have recently taken place more and more frequently on the streets of Germany. Activists of the climate group "Last Generation" block roads, whereupon frustrated motorists lend a hand and pull the protesters aside. The line of the police here is that only they themselves are allowed to take action here – which, until the officers intervene, usually means annoying waiting time for motorists. This is what happened during a blockade on Monday in Regensburg, when two activists took to the streets.

Matthias Schimmrich, who is in a wheelchair due to a progressive autoimmune disease, was also in the middle of the way, according to the X article of the "Last Generation". As the video shows, two motorists then pulled it off the road. Twice, because he got in the way again in between, this is shown by the scenes of the video that the "Last Generation" had uploaded to X. Earlier, the two motorists had also torn away the banner held up by the activists.

One of the motorists knocked the cell phone out of the hand of the member of the "Last Generation" who was filming the scene. One user commented on this on X with the word "favorite moment". Another X-user wrote: "You're happy, even more excitement. That's what it's all about." Meanwhile, the "Last Generation" announced that the wheelchair user was taken into police custody.

Blockade in front of BMW plant in Regensburg – "Last Generation" makes announcement true

On Saturday, August 19, the "Last Generation" had stopped Prime Minister Markus Söder at a PR event – and announced in the accompanying press release that they would first create blockades in Regensburg and then make Munich a protest stronghold. They even gave a specific date for this. The activists at least made the first part of the announcement true – because on Tuesday, August 22, they also caused a blockade in Regensburg.

Early in the morning, they blocked the access roads to the BMW plant in Regensburg. Around 40 people were involved in the blockades on three streets in Regensburg, a police spokeswoman said. "Companies like BMW have known for decades the destruction caused by the massive CO₂ emissions of their products and yet continue to make a happy profit from them. Our government is also not intervening, although it would be its duty to protect our fundamental rights to freedom and life," explains a neurobiology student from Berlin who was present, according to the press release.

Of the twelve activists who blocked roads on Monday, five were released shortly after being taken into custody by police. The remaining seven, however, had to spend the night in detention cells – the judge in charge had ordered preventive detention, which is only possible in Bavaria, in order to prevent announced crimes. According to a police spokeswoman, the activists should be released in the course of Tuesday. (FHZ)
