Rostock – On Thursday morning, several activists of the "Last Generation", who are committed to climate protection and against climate change, which more than half of Germans perceive as threatening, blocked an intersection in Rostock. Between August-Bebel-Straße and Hermannstraße in the center of the city, traffic came to a standstill for a short time. The Ostsee-Zeitung was the first to report on it.

"Last Generation" blocks roads in Rostock

On Thursday morning, around 7:30 a.m., some people had also glued themselves to the asphalt on the road to express their protest against climate change, which could even sink German coastal towns into the sea. It is still unclear how many climate activists took part in this morning blockade. According to OZ, a total of eleven people were involved in the occupation of the intersection.

Protest action in Rostock rush hour traffic: "Last generation" blocks intersection

"Initially, five people had shown banners and then actively blocked August-Bebel-Straße. Four people had stuck themselves on the street," said the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state police. "Within a very short time, the deployed officers were able to dissolve the blockade," it continues. Since the people did not want to leave the street voluntarily after repeated requests, they were released from the street by the officers and carried away.

Climate activist expects criminal proceedings for "unregistered assembly" and coercion

The action led to a traffic jam in the morning rush hour. Traffic had to be diverted at the Steintor intersection. After about 15 minutes, the road was reopened.

"The activists are now awaiting criminal proceedings on suspicion of holding an unregistered gathering and coercion," it said in a press release. Again and again, actions by climate activists cause discussions. Just recently, an ARD documentary showed how passers-by in Berlin attack climate activists. The "preventive detention" of a Regensburg citizen also led to debates about what democracy should allow, or even endure.
