Washington, D.C. - Annalena Baerbock is visiting the United States. There is criticism of Germany's allegedly too hesitant support for Ukraine. The foreign minister didn't want to leave it that way – and was interviewed by the right-wing TV channel Fox News. In doing so, she called for a joint effort. "Ukraine must win this war. Freedom and democracy must win. And we will stand by Ukraine's side as long as it lasts," Baerbock said on the "Special Report with Bret Baier" program.

But it is not just about Ukraine and "freedom in Europe", said the minister. Russian President Vladimir Putin is fighting against all democracies worldwide. "That's why we have to stand together." In doing so, she also met critical voices, especially from the ranks of the Republicans, who accuse the federal government of a lack of commitment. "We are stronger than Putin's brutal aggression," the Green minister added.

Baerbock talks to Fox News about aid for Ukraine

In the Fox News interview, Baerbock also addressed criticism from opposition Republicans of the massive Ukraine aid provided by US President Joe Biden's administration. Former President Donald Trump, for example, has called for Europeans to do more. The Republicans, with their narrow majority in the House of Representatives, can block new aid for Kiev. She understands issues about inflation and rising food prices, Baerbock said. "We have the same discussion in Europe. But we always have to ask ourselves what would happen if we didn't support Ukraine."

The question of the Republicans' stance on aid to Ukraine also arises in the longer term. The opposition party has a chance of retaking the White House in the November 2024 presidential election. In the party's primaries, which start in January, Trump is the overwhelming favorite.

Baerbock made it clear, however, that she also sees support in the ranks of the Trump party for long-term support for Ukraine. And she warned that if Putin were to win the Ukraine war because there was no longer any further support from Kyiv, "that would also be a fatal signal to other dictatorships, to other autocracies in this world," Baerbock said. Specifically, she mentioned the name of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Green politician also spoke about her visit to Texas, where she met Republican Governor Greg Abbott. She wanted to get a picture of everyday life among the general population on site, Baerbock said. She also learned about how the state, known for its rich oil reserves, is switching more and more to renewable energies.

During the six-minute conversation with the minister, there was a technical glitch, which is why Baier had to be represented by substitute moderator Rich Edson for two questions. The channel's interview with Baerbock was embedded in coverage of the indictment of US president's son Hunter Biden and the announcement of an interview with the controversial Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. In addition, the program was about a report on findings about extraterrestrials.

Baerbock meets US Secretary of State Blinken

This Friday, Baerbock will continue her visit to Washington with consultations with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Continued support for Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia, is also likely to play an important role in this meeting. Before the start of the UN General Assembly in New York at the beginning of next week, it is also expected that topics such as how to deal with China and measures against the worsening of the climate crisis will also be addressed.
