What's next for the expansion of the A8, and what will become of the rejected Holzkirchen bypasses? Karl Bär (Greens) has asked for up-to-date information from the Federal Ministry of Transport.
Holzkirchen – Traffic in the Nordlandkreis is a regular topic of discussion. The Holzkirchen member of the Bundestag Karl Bär (Greens) now reports news on two projects from the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan: The planned expansion of the A8 will be massively more expensive – and the Holzkirchen bypass will "not be pursued for the time being".
Expansion of the A8 motorway from Holzkirchen to the Inntal triangle: costs of 735.7 million euros
The eight-lane expansion of the A8 from the Holzkirchen junction to the Inn Valley Triangle has so far been listed as an urgent need in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan. "This plan would have serious implications for residents in the communities of Holzkirchen, Valley, Weyarn and Irschenberg," Karl Bär said in a press release yesterday. And the costs would also be significantly higher than previously assumed – by 75 percent. The Green member of the Bundestag learned this at the request of the FDP-led Federal Ministry of Transport, he says.

"According to the current status, the project will now be around 320 million euros more expensive compared to the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan of 2015." The cost estimate is currently 735.7 million euros; In 2015, when the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 was drawn up, 413.8 million euros were assumed. "According to the ministry, the cost increases are mainly based on the development of construction prices," says Bär.

Member of the Bundestag Bär (Greens) thinks: Better to use taxpayers' money differently
The Green MP, who has been campaigning against the motorway expansion for years, sees his rejection of the project confirmed: "An even wider roadway that brings even more traffic to us is wrong anyway. The fact that costs are now exploding is a clear sign that this building should now be buried for good," he appeals. "We have to use taxpayers' money sensibly. The manpower of the people in the authorities and planning offices is also better used in the renovation of bridges, the expansion of railway lines or traffic calming in the municipalities," says the Holzkirchner.

Referendum rejected bypasses near Holzkirchen
Meanwhile, a different picture is emerging with the Holzkirchen bypasses, which were rejected by a majority in the referendum in 2022. At Bär's request, the Federal Ministry of Transport had announced that the plans for the bypasses around Holzkirchen, Großhartpenning and Kurzenberg had not yet been discontinued, "but will not be pursued by the Free State of Bavaria, which is planning the bypasses on behalf of the federal government, for the time being".
As reported, proponents recently wanted to rekindle the discussion. They do not see the rejection in the referendum as a general vote against bypasses, but "only" as a rejection of the routes offered by the road construction office. However, the authority had made it clear several times that there were no alternatives that had a legally realistic prospect of feasibility.
