A bus carrying students overturned on a New York freeway Thursday afternoon, injuring dozens of people, some seriously, authorities confirmed to NBC News.
Authorities did not immediately say what caused the incident on Interstate 84 in Wawayanda, Orange County. The vehicle appears to have veered off the road and fallen onto an embankment.
The vehicle was carrying high school students on their way to a marching band event, according to authorities.
At least 46 people were injured in the incident, and five of them are in critical condition, Orange County executive Steven Neuhaus told NBC News affiliate station in New York.
Sources cited by Noticias Telemundo's affiliate station in New York said at least 50 people were on board, it was unclear how many of them were students.
The bus was carrying band members from Long Island's Farmingdale High School, school officials told NBC News, and was headed to Greeley, Pennsylvania, for an event at a marching band camp.
