(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 22 - Flags have been placed at half-mastin Naples after the death at 98 of one of the southern city'smost illustrious sons, two time former president GiorgioNapolitano, Mayor Gaetano Manfredi said.
'On behalf of the municipal administration and the entire city,I express my great sorrow for the death of President GiorgioNapolitano," said Manfredi.
"He always defended the fundamental principles of theConstitution and represented Naples at the highest level with anextraordinary sense of the institutions.
"As a sign of mourning, I immediately placed the flags athalf-mast at the City Hall'.
The mourning flags were displayed at Palazzo San Giacomo and atthe Via Verdi Palace, headquarters of the Naples City Council.
