Cold air masses, heavy rain and the first ground frost: Autumn seems to be coming. But an ex-hurricane causes a surprising turnaround.
Munich – After a series of storms swept across Germany, another drastic change in the weather is imminent. A cold front is expected in Germany as early as Thursday night and will bring with it a noticeable drop in temperature, forecasts weather expert Dominic Jung.

Weather crash: Expert expects cool days – DWD warns of heavy rain and thunderstorms
This year's September is the warmest since weather records began in 1881 and even surpasses some summer months in terms of temperatures. So far this month, one summer day followed the next. But that is changing for the time being. "Now we are facing a big, or at least felt big, drop in temperature," warns the wetter.net expert. Cool air masses displace the heat, "so there will be a few cooler days for the time being".
The German Weather Service (DWD) also warns of heavy rain and thunderstorms over northern Hesse. Precipitation between 15 and 25 litres per hour is expected, and in some places up to 45 litres of rain could fall within six hours.

"The wind is changing, the air masses are increasingly coming from the northwest," explains Jung. Already in the night to Friday the weather will be very changeable, with clouds, rain showers and occasional continuous rain. Temperatures drop to 10 to 15 degrees. It will also remain cooler on Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures dropping to 4 to 8 degrees at night (measured at a height of two meters).
"That's enough for the first ground frost in some areas," says Jung. After the arrival of the cold air on Friday, it will be rainy at first, especially in the south of Germany. The rain showers can also be more severe in places. Temperatures range from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, accompanied by a fresh wind.

With the passage of the cold front from west to east, showers, rain and isolated thunderstorms are to be expected. Temperatures will drop. It will stay cooler until Sunday. But then the former hurricane "Nigel" gets involved again. It brings warm air masses all the way to Germany – and the summer joys begin again: "Summer seems to want to make one comeback after the other this year," says Jung. As early as next week, temperatures could reach up to 30 degrees again.
