Again there is a fire in Sicily. On the Italian island, tourists also had to be brought to safety from the beach.
Palermo – Another fire alarm in the south of Italy. "Palermo and Sicily are burning," writes the Repubblica in a recent article. People are brought to safety. Nevertheless, it is also reported in the event of death.
Affected by the fire alarm is therefore the entire Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily. According to Ansa, the "long front of fire" stretches from Gratteri to Cefalè. The Palermo motorway is closed between the towns of Cefalù and Castelbuono. The flames are fed by the sirocco, a hot wind that blows from the Sahara towards the Mediterranean.

According to the report, the fire broke out in the mountains around Gibilmanna. From here it spread to the very areas of Sicily that had already been ravaged by violent fires that summer.
The situation is currently precarious, especially in the region around the coastal city of Cefalù, which is popular with tourists. The fire has reached the Rapputi district, creating a "very complicated situation", said the deputy mayor of Cefalù, Rosario Lapunzina.
In the course of the day, the flames then moved further towards the coast and towards the districts of Settefrati and Mazzaforno, reports the Repubblica. As a result, two hotel accommodations in Mazzaforno were evacuated: the Hapimag resort and the Sporting Club. Almost 300 people then sought refuge on the beach. They were then brought to safety by sea by coast guard boats and private ships.

In the Ogliastrillo district of Cefalù, water and electricity have now failed, it adds. There are also individual reports of damage to houses. Daniele Tumminello, mayor of Cefalù, asked the people of the city to keep the streets clear so as not to obstruct the emergency services.

Due to the strong wind, a firefighting aircraft had to interrupt its operation in the morning for a few hours. Twelve tanker aircraft, one Canadair, two helicopters and twelve teams of forestry workers are deployed.
Critical situations also occurred on the Palermo-Messina motorway. Near Pollina, several cars and a bus were trapped in a tunnel as the flames blocked the exit. The vehicles rescued themselves backwards from the situation. (rjs)
