ProSieben and RTL hoped to win the ratings with tried-and-tested entertainment formats. The decision between "The Voice of Germany" and "Disgrace or Cash" was close.
Cologne/ Berlin – On Thursday evening (September 21, 2023), there were two premieres on private television: "Blamieren oder Kassieren" with Elton (52) ran for the first time on RTL and ProSieben sent a new season of "The Voice of Germany" into the race. The latter format has been properly revised – and is intended to convince with a new jury led by Giovanni Zarrella (45). Did that work?
Weak "The Voice" start: Could Zarrella score against Elton's "embarrassment or cash"?
The ProSiebenSat.1 Group has learned from declining ratings in the past and really ramped up in the new season of "The Voice of Germany". In addition to international megastar Ronan Keating (46), the jury also includes top representatives of the German music scene. Schlager favorite Giovanni Zarrella, the polarizing rapper Shirin David (28) and the Tokio Hotel brothers Bill (34) and Tom (34) Kaulitz are to revolutionize the format and bring in top ratings. However, there was also tough competition at primetime in the form of the RTL new edition "Blamieren oder Kassieren" with Elton.
In fact, things didn't really go smoothly for "The Voice" on Thursday night. Although a passable 14.49 million viewers (market share 0.63 percent) were achieved in the advertising-relevant target group of 12- to 6-year-olds, losses were made overall. Compared to the opening episode of the previous season, around 1,59 fewer people tuned in, according to DWDL, with 600.000 million viewers. If you look back even further, the range has now even been halved.
"Disgrace or Cash" on RTL had to admit defeat in the target group with a market share of 12.1 percent, but still emerged as the winner in the overall reach.
"Disgrace or cash": Switch to RTL
Actually, "Disgrace or Cash" belonged as a sub-format to "TV Total" in the ProSieben program. A few weeks ago, however, it was announced that Elton would get his own slot on RTL with the quiz duel. The channel is currently planning twelve episodes, which are around 30 minutes long.
Purpose of the game: Two celebrities compete against each other in a question game, Elton moderates the whole thing. It all started on September 21 with Mario Basler (54) and Felix von Jascheroff (41).
"Embarrassing or cashing" with Elton gets top ratings: Channel change to RTL successful
The fact that Elton and his quiz show (formerly at ProSieben) suddenly belong in the RTL program apparently did not bother the TV audience at all. Quite the opposite: 1.94 million people watched, which corresponds to a solid market share of 7.9 percent of the total audience. As a result, "Disgrace or Cash" even made it to 18th place among the most-watched shows of the entire Thursday – and beat "The Voice of Germany" with Giovanni Zarrella and Co.

The good result is probably also due to the fact that RTL used "Disgrace or Cash" as a football countdown. At 20:40 CET, the Europa League broadcast of Olympiacos Piraeus against FC Freiburg replaced Elton's show. 2.58 million watched the match and gave RTL a double-digit market value of 14 percent. "The Summer House of the Stars" also brought RTL dream ratings at the start of broadcasting on Tuesday. Sources used:DWDL
