A giant alligator was caught Friday carrying the body of a man down a ditch in its jaws. A witness first spotted the 4.9-foot-long reptile with its victim trapped between its jaws on a residential street in Largo, a small community just four miles south of Clearwater, Florida.

"I could see there was a body in his mouth, so I started filming," JaMarcus Bullard told Spectrum Bay News <>. Bullard, who was on his way to a job interview, alerted the fire department, whose station was just steps away.

Emergency crews immediately arrived on the scene, were able to quickly pull the alligator out of the water and shot him "several times," Ballardd said Photos from the scene show investigators standing next to the alligator and a huge pool of blood and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office confirmed that both the human body and the alligator were pulled out of the ditch after they claimed the enormous alligator was "humanely shot dead by experts."

The area is near popular Ridgecrest Park, which includes a 20,000-square-foot lake known to house alligators who routinely roam the neighborhood, but residents said the body they saw Friday was one of the largest they'd ever encountered.

Officials said the body had not yet been identified and the death investigation was ongoing, and did not release further information about the incident or whether the alligator was involved in the killing or had just found the body after he had already died.
