Let's stop, this little game 'it's not them, it's us'!" Arnaud Robinet, mayor of Reims (51), cannot believe to see Emmanuel Macron and the mayors pass the responsibility for the soaring property tax rather than trying to initiate a reflection on the overhaul of local taxation. Anne Hidalgo, who announced at the end of 2022 the largest increase (in the tax rate) in France, namely +52%, had justified, in early September, this measure which has angered Parisians, by the collapse of operating grants paid by the State to communities.
In a television interview broadcast on Sunday, the head of state retorted that the responsibility lay with the mayors. "When you have your property tax that increases, it's not the government, it's your municipality," says Emmanuel Macron. It's a scandal when I hear elected officials who dare to say it's the government's fault." Thomas Cazenave, Minister Delegate for Public Accounts confirms: "The property tax is a 100% local tax!" Contacted by Le Figaro, his entourage did not respond to our request. What about reality? Is the President of the Republic right?
