Three people have died and six others were injured of varying severity in an accident that occurred on Sunday afternoon in a tunnel of the A-7 motorway as it passes through the municipality of Rubite (403 inhabitants), on the coast of Granada, in the direction of Almeria. The van, in which 10 people were traveling as confirmed by sources familiar with the investigation, suffered about four in the afternoon a high-speed crash against the wall of the tunnel through which it was traveling. As a result, everyone in the vehicle was injured to a greater or lesser extent. Those same sources confirm that the tests carried out on the driver have confirmed a positive for alcohol. Also, they explain, they have obtained indications that suggest that he had consumed drugs.
According to the first data, the person driving the van fell asleep at the wheel and that caused the strong impact against the walls of the tunnel. That driver, who was also injured in the crash, remains hospitalized and is officially detained. The Civil Guard investigates him as the alleged perpetrator of the crimes of reckless homicide, injuries and driving under the influence of alcohol, according to Europa Press.
The Emergency Service 112 of Andalusia has reported in a statement that it was other drivers who alerted of the accident. At first, the 112 reported two deaths, although late Sunday afternoon the figure was expanded to three. The injured were transferred to different health centers in Motril and Granada capital. The injured admitted to the Santa Ana de Motril hospital remains in the ICU while those transferred to the Traumatology Hospital of Granada, where they arrived by helicopter, are on the floor.
During the early morning, and not far from the site of this accident, in the town of Murtas (in the region of Las Alpujarras), another man died when he left the road with his car. Assistance services found the driver already dead and could do nothing for his life.
From January 1 to September 21 (latest figures from the DGT), in the province of Granada there have been 13 fatal accidents, 9 less than in the same period last year. The number of deaths has also fallen, from 23 to 13 compared to 2022.
