Since the devastating hailstorm at the end of August, the operator of the Bad Wiessee arena has been struggling with a wetness problem. When it rains, it drips from the ceiling.

Bad Wiessee – The weather has recently made the play arena in Bad Wiessee difficult. Not only did the long heat phase in the summer cause operator Sepp Niedermayer to lose sales. The devastating hailstorm at the end of August went one step further: the projectiles caused such severe damage and punctures on the roof of the hall that moisture is now penetrating the play paradise. "It's a stalactite hall," Niedermayer sighs.

In case of rain, buckets are set up in the play arena

Currently, the operator and founder of the play and sports arena has to make do with buckets. As soon as it rains, water comes from the ceiling. "It's dripping in a wide variety of places – it's unpredictable and very unpleasant," Niedermayer reports. He must make sure that not too much moisture gets on the floor of the hall – otherwise it will swell.

Operator Niedermayer hopes for a speedy emergency repair

According to Niedermayer, the twelve light bands of the arena, which had already been damaged by a previous hail, were so badly affected by the storm on August 26 that they had to be replaced. However, Niedermayer doubts that this can be achieved before winter. "The multi-skin sheets have a long delivery time," says the operator. The order books of the specialist companies are full. Niedermayer is therefore hoping for an emergency repair by means of tarpaulins that could be used to temporarily seal the roof. The fact that less light then penetrates into the hall would be the lesser of two evils for Niedermayer. With the request for an emergency repair, Niedermayer has recently also written to the municipality. The hall is owned by Jodschwefelbad Bad Wiessee GmbH, which is 100 percent owned by the municipality.

Air dome also damaged: Niedermayer is left with the costs

Niedermayer was also unlucky with his air dome, which is located in the vicinity of the arena and houses two tennis courts. "The outermost layer of the hall was completely perforated," reports Niedermayer. Here, as the owner, he is left with the costs: "The air dome is not insurable." In the meantime, he has initiated a repair of the shell, but it will probably take some time. However, the two tennis courts can also be used in their current state, the operator emphasizes.

Future of the Bad Wiessee arena uncertain after 2026

According to Niedermayer, the lease agreement for the games and sports arena on Wilhelminastraße, which Niedermayer and Mayor Robert Kühn (SPD) had only extended in spring 2021, runs until May 2026. What happens to the building and the play arena located in it afterwards remains to be seen. For the 73-year-old Niedermayer himself, it will probably be over for good. However, the founder would have wanted the arena to have a future in Bad Wiessee even without him. The popularity of the facility among children, young people and families is unbroken. "And there is no similar offer in the Tegernsee Valley in sight," says Niedermayer. He is convinced that the arena will continue to be indispensable in the future as a bad weather offer. Just recently, around 30 birthday parties took place in the arena on one weekend alone. "I would like her to have a future."

Insurance has just given the okay for the emergency repair

As far as repairing the current hail damage is concerned, Mayor Robert Kühn has good news for the tenant. The insurance company has just given its okay both for the basic repair of the damage to the hall roof and for the desired emergency repair, the head of the town hall announced on Monday afternoon (25 September). This means that operations in the arena can continue unhindered.
