The Greens want a commitment to the expansion of the cycle path over the Braunauer Bridge. The city should therefore now send a signal to the railway. Time is of the essence.
Munich - The city's long-standing efforts to use the Braunau Bridge for traffic and the expansion of this Isar crossing into a cycle route along the railway line to Theresienhöhe are now to be given greater emphasis. In a motion, the Greens are calling for the plans of Deutsche Bahn (DB) for the Poccistraße regional train stop to be used in order to bring about a city council resolution on the realization of this route as soon as possible.
Cycle path over Braunau railway bridge: City should speak out in favour of the expansion at Deutsche Bahn
To this end, the mobility department is to draw up a template with a rough plan in which the state capital commits itself in principle to the realisation of this cycle route vis-à-vis DB.
City councillor Paul Bickelbacher refers to the time pressure that has arisen as a result of the plans for the Poccistraße regional train stop: "If Munich finally wants to open the Braunau Bridge for bicycle and pedestrian traffic and continue the route to Theresienhöhe, then the city must seize the opportunity now." The railway had already signaled to the district committee Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt the willingness to take the cycle route into account in the planning of the regional train stop, provided that the state capital seriously pursues the construction. "Without this expression of interest, this option is likely to expire for a long time."
Braunau railway bridge: Green City Council sees opportunity to connect Westpark with the Isar
The route would offer the opportunity to connect the Westpark with the Isar without coming into contact with car traffic. "At the same time, it is a safe route for children and families and a speedy route for everyday cyclists. The route would create a connection from the densely populated Schwanthalerhöhe to the Isar and link the extensive area of the Westpark and the cycle connections to the western city limits with the Isar. "In addition, the regional train stop Poccistraße as a new southern station, the vocational school for educators and the new Volkstheater would have a highly attractive connection to the pedestrian and cycle path network."
New bridges would have to be built over the Dreimühlenstraße, the Isartalstraße and the Stadtbach. The city would have to acquire the Braunau Bridge from the railway and convert it accordingly. Statically, this shouldn't be a problem, because pedestrians and cyclists are a lot lighter than freight trains."
Plans for the bike path over the bridge: SPD had recently requested that the city take over the construction
Politically, it has long been clear that the city wants to use the disused track in the northern part of the Braunauer Bridge for bicycle traffic and pedestrians. The SPD had recently requested that the city take over the building from the railway in order to be able to prepare it. The CSU had already spoken out in a motion for a cycle path.
