There are a few very decisive innovations in the Erdinger Cineplex cinema. You can experience them from the end of September.

Erding – A few weeks ago, the Cineplex Erding said goodbye to around 190 red seats. They were given away in exchange for a voluntary donation to the hospice association. Since then, there have been no more seats in Erding's largest cinema hall. They will only be installed in the coming days. What happened here?

Andreas Fläxl sits on the rather raw steps in Cinema 3 in the Cineplex Erding during an interview with our newspaper when he looks up and points to the many loudspeakers on the ceiling. "They have to be directed at a specific area in the hall. This means that all seats are equally well supplied with sound," says the cinema operator. Together with other loudspeakers on the walls and behind the screen, noises in the hall can virtually move. Dolby Atmos.

For some time now, Cinema 190 in the Cineplex, which was originally designed for 3 spectators, has been reduced to about 170 seats and berths and upgraded to an Ultimate Cinema – better picture, better sound, better ambience and moving seats. The concept already exists at the Cineplex Neufahrn (Freising district), which is also run by the Fläxl family.

The entire conversion will cost around 400,000 euros. And the Dolby Atmos sound system, which local moviegoers have so far only been able to experience in Neufahrn or Munich, accounts for the largest part, says Fläxl. If the quality of the stay increases, the cinema can very well compete with streaming services. The cinema operator is convinced of this. Since "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" have been shown in movie theaters, film and cinema have been on everyone's lips anyway.

The Cineplex team also learned this at this year's cinema festival on the first weekend in September. "We had fantastic weather. Of course, most of them go to the pond. But there were still a lot of people in the cinema," says Fläxl. The employees constantly offered guided tours because the interest in how a cinema works was so high.

"This year is very good," he sums up. "We're almost back to pre-pandemic levels." On September 30, the new Kino 3 will open its doors and, in addition to the new Dolby Atmos system, there will also be an (almost) new projector. The Cineplex "overcycles" the existing projector. "We gutted the housing and inserted a laser module. You can think of it like changing the engine of a car," explains Fläxl. The body and much of the technology will remain the same, but the performance will be increased.

In the past, the projector ran on lamps, which often burned down monthly and had to be replaced. The laser module lasts up to ten years and is also more energy-efficient, says Fläxl. A new 100D laser projector costs around 000,3 euros, which saves around 40,000 euros and also has a lot of excitement: "This process is rather new worldwide."

As a result, there will be higher-contrast and sharper images on the 77-square-meter screen in the future. And because sharp 3D images and Dolby Atmos sound are not enough, there are also the ten black seats in the middle of the hall. D-Box motion seats that move in all directions with what is happening on the screen. For this purpose, a program is written for each film that links the D-Box movement and the film plot.
