The weather in Austria currently has late summer warmth, but also snow. A mountain hut opened the snow bar at the weekend.
Munich/Vienna – September often has two weather faces: it can be uncomfortable and stormy, but it can also have relatively high temperatures and warm late summer days.
From a meteorological point of view, September 1 heralds the end of summer, but so far the autumn temperatures have turned back to summer. And spoiled us in many places with warm Indian summer weather. According to weather experts, temperatures in Germany are likely to remain high until mid-October shortly before the time change to winter time. In Austria, on the other hand, there has already been a surprising onset of winter – in the middle of September.

The onset of winter in Austria: Photos show thick snow in the middle of September
On September 23rd, the calendrical and astronomical autumn officially begins and he is already doing what he wants in Austria. The Vorarlberg mountain hut "Totalp Hütte" is covered in plenty of snow and wrote on Facebook on Saturday (23 September): "The snow bar is open." The post also contained numerous pictures of the snow-white outdoor area of the restaurant.
The Totalp hut is located at an altitude of 2,385 metres above Lake Lünsersee on a small plateau surrounded by climbing and hiking mountains. According to the portal Wetter.at, it cooled down to minus 24 degrees Celsius on Sunday night (3 September). Currently, the snow line in Vorarlberg is around 2000 meters.
Two weeks ago, many visitors were still sitting on the beer benches in the sunshine, but now there is a complete contrast. The guests of the hut in Vorarlberg, who wore thick down jackets, were served hot punch. At the beginning of September, meteorologist Sigi Fink warned for the first time of a possible onset of winter. In July, the snow line in the Austrian Alps had already dropped to below 2000 meters.

Weather in Austria: Cold front should not last – the golden autumn is expected
According to Wetter.at, the snow lines in other Austrian provinces are currently (as of 25 September) at:
- Salzburg: approx. 2000 metres
- Tyrol: approx. 2000 metres
- Styria: around 2000 meters
- Carinthia: approx. 3000 meters
- Upper Austria: approx. 2000 metres
However, the cool temperatures are not expected to last long. As orf.at reports, late summer will be back on Tuesday (26 September). The daily high temperatures on Monday are already 16 to 23 degrees. To the west, the sun usually shines all day long. Highs of up to 27 degrees are even forecast for Wednesday (27 September). So there is no end to the weather back and forth. It was not until the end of August that a catastrophic storm occurred in Austria. (VW)
