Big chair move at the Mainz University Medicine: After months of quarrels, the board of directors is almost completely reorganized. Something is also happening at the top of the Supervisory Board.

Mainz - The Mainz University Medical Center, which is facing major challenges and shaken by deep internal disputes, is almost completely repositioning itself at the top in terms of personnel. Changes will be made to three out of four board positions, and the chairmanship of the supervisory board will also come into new hands. For example, the largest clinic in Rhineland-Palatinate, which is struggling with heavy losses, is to get back into calmer waters.

The previous commercial director Christian Elsner, who has come under heavy criticism for his austerity course, especially among the hospital managers under the umbrella of university medicine, will leave the university medicine at the end of September. They had mutually agreed on his dismissal, said Alt. His contract would have run until 2026, he will receive a severance payment of 500,000 euros, according to the information. His successor will be the former Chancellor of Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) Mainz, Waltraud Kreutz-Gers, starting in November.

A new medical and a new scientific board have also been found - the positions are to be filled on a rotational basis. On January 1, 2024, Ralf Kiesslich will take over as medical director and chairman of the board. He is currently the Medical Director of Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Kliniken Wiesbaden. Kiesslich knows the Mainz University Hospital well from earlier times, completed his specialist training here, habilitated in Mainz and obtained his professorship here. Norbert Pfeiffer, who is still in office as a medical director and CEO, will be available as a contact person until the end of his board contract at the end of March, Alt explained.

For the position of scientific director, Thomas Kamradt is to be proposed to the faculty council in April 2024, here an election for the appointment is necessary. According to the Ministry of Science, Kamradt is currently still scientific director and dean at Jena University Hospital. Marion Hahn's contract, which previously ran until the end of January 2024, has been extended by one year.

From the beginning of 2024, Science Minister Clemens Hoch (SPD) will take over the chairmanship of the Supervisory Board of the University Medical Center from State Secretary Alt. He wanted to make it clear how important university medicine is, Hoch said. "It should also be an explicit signal to the workforce."

Both Kiesslich and Kreutz-Gers cited it as important tasks to regain more constructive cooperation at the University Medical Center. "There is a certain stagnation in the dialogue," Kiesslich said. Kreutz-Gers said: "I am very aware that this is not an easy situation, especially at University Medicine." It is normal that there are differences of opinion, but these should not be carried out externally.

In the future, one of the core tasks of the University Chancellor will also be to improve the financial situation of the University Medical Center despite difficult conditions. Last year, the house had to accept a deficit of 65.1 million euros, and a minus of more than 2023 million euros is expected for 57.

According to Alt, there had been a total of about two dozen applications for the two posts of medical and scientific board. With regard to the outgoing commercial director Elsner, the state secretary said that it was not appropriate to pin the deficit only on his person, there was a whole bundle of causes - including the framework conditions. Almost all university hospitals in Germany are struggling with losses.

Hoch announced that he would make proposals for an amendment to the University Medical Act before the end of this year. He considers it imperative that the nursing board be given full voting rights on the board in the future. He said he was open to discussions about whether there could be a board of directors responsible for construction measures in the future. The University Medical Center has a fairly old building stock, which makes it difficult to operate the hospital. This is set to change, with a construction master plan envisaging investments totalling around 2038.2 billion euros by 2. Dpa
