"Perpetrators, Helpers, Free Riders" is a series of books by Wolfgang Proske that sheds light on the Nazi past in southern Germany. Now people from Freising are also to be portrayed.

Freising – In 2010, the first title of the book series "Perpetrators, Helpers, Free Riders" was published. It is about people from the East Alb who were incriminated by the Nazis. The editor is the German social scientist, historian and educator Wolfgang Proske. So far, 16 volumes have been published, and four more are now to follow. Volume 17 deals with "Nazi-Burdened Persons from Upper Bavaria North". Of the 20 to 25 people with a Nazi past that are discussed in each book, four people from Freising are to be examined in detail in volume 17, as the head of the department for tourism and culture, Ingo Bartha, explained on Tuesday at the meeting of the cultural committee.

Portraits of Freisinger with a Nazi past

In detail, the following are portrayed: Karl Maria Demelhuber. Born in Freising, he held various high-ranking positions in the Waffen-SS. Else Kreis, a Nazi women's association leader from the district of Freising. Hans Lechner, Lord Mayor of the city of Freising and SA special commissioner as well as involved in the development of the NSDAP. And the Freising entrepreneur Anton Schlüter, who employed forced laborers.

The portraits of these Freisingers will be written by the historian and Left Party city councillor Guido Hoyer and Wolf-Ulrich Strittmatter, as Bartha explained. He had also submitted the grant application, which was now available to the cultural committee for the book, Freising's city archivist Florian Notter. "He knows this book series and considers it worthy of support," Bartha explained to the committee members about a better assessment of the project.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

They were enthusiastic about the book series: "We have the opportunity here to support a project by a well-known scientist who is doing a very good and important historical reappraisal for us," said Nico Heitz (Greens). His parliamentary group colleague Werner Habermeyer added: "If the project fails because the city of Freising does not support it financially, I would never forgive myself as a city councilor."

Also important against the shift to the right

Karlheinz Freitag (FW) also made a plea for this book: "In my school days, I still experienced teachers who carried out the ideas of the Nazis." At a time like today, when there is once again a clear shift to the right, everything must be done to ensure that this attitude of mind no longer has an effect on families. "We should encourage it in the hope that as many young people as possible will read it."

City takes over a third of the deficit

Jürgen Mieskes (CSU) spoke out absolutely in favor of the book series and also for financial support – just not in the amount of 1660 euros proposed by the administration. To him, 800 euros seemed sufficient – especially since the publisher does not come from Freising. "We still have 10,000 euros in the remaining funds in the cultural fund. There is no reason not to treat this application in the same way as our cultural funding guidelines," said Nikolas-Pano Graßy. And Jürgen Mieskes' argument that the city of Dachau – similar in size to Freising – would only contribute 750 euros – did not convince the other committee members either. "There is a cultural fund with concrete guidelines. I don't think it's consistent to look at what other cities are doing. There is no reason to deviate from our own rules here," said Samuel Fosso (FSM).

Mayor Eva Bönig (Greens) first voted on Jürgen Mieskes' motion. Except for him, everyone was against a reduction in the subsidy. And so the city of Freising takes over a third of the deficit, i.e. 1660 euros.
