National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir is participating Thursday in a cornerstone laying ceremony for a police station in Shfar'am, a day after the brutal massacre in Basmat Tivon. The ceremony is also attended by Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai.

As part of the ceremony, Minister Ben-Gvir gave a statement to the media and referred to the horrific shooting incident that took place in the Jezreel Valley in which five people were murdered: "The bleeding day hurts all of Israeli society," Ben-Gvir said, adding: "Only yesterday six people were murdered."

But afterwards, the minister moved on to the construction of the new police station: "For a moment I want to talk about this bright spot of establishing a new police station on Shfar'am's main street – whose officers are busy providing a sense of security to everyone, Jews, Arabs, Christians, Circassians, the entire public – in enforcement and in providing service to the public."

"I see all the residents of Shfar'am and residents of the entire area coming to the new building, inviting, beautiful and respectful, receiving service and experiencing a good experience," the minister added, promising: "I also see a station with more police officers - investigators will soon be added to the Shfar'am police. I am sure that a large-scale station will be built here with more and more police officers and manpower."

The Minister of National Security added: "We must admit that alongside the difficult things we are experiencing, the police today have many positive points. Together with the police commissioner, working together, we brought grants, raised salaries for police officers and added standards to strengthen the sense of security."

Among the victims of yesterday's massacre were a woman in her 30s, her two sons, Walid Delika, 17, and Adam Delika, 14, and two other boys, nephews of the woman's husband. An MDA team called to the scene gave them medical treatment, but in the end they had no choice but to pronounce the five dead. Another man sustained moderate injuries and was taken to hospital by crews with penetrating injuries. A connection between the massacre and the assassination that occurred earlier yesterday in Haifa is being investigated. The police have opened an investigation into the case.
