California Gov. Gavin Newsom has chosen Laphonza Butler, president of EMILY's list, to fill Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein's seat, Newsom's office confirmed to NBC News.
Feinstein, the longest-serving woman in the Senate, died Thursday at age 90.

In California, the governor has the power to elect a senator until the next scheduled statewide election is held. That means Butler will hold the post until the next senator, who will be chosen by voters in November 2024, is sworn in.
Butler has led the organization EMILY's List since 2021, which works to elect women to the Democratic Party.
