There would be enough space: the crew quarters at the air base (right) could be used as refugee accommodation. However, the Ministry of Defence is not responsible for preparing the conversion of important © Hans Seeholzer
For a year, Erding has been struggling with the federal government to open the largely empty air base. The city says it falls on deaf ears. Our research has revealed: In principle, Bima makes properties available – but not in Erding. These are the Greens - and there is a new proposal.
Erding – The never-ending story about the efforts of the city and district of Erding to use the crew accommodation at Erding Air Base for refugees began almost a year ago – when the number of arrivals went up sharply, which the state and federal government are only now registering. What outrages Mayor Max Götz and District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer (CSU) so much: Several times their letters were answered in a pleasingly short time, but always with an unfounded no.
Erding: "A large part of the air base is currently not available for refugee accommodation"
Our newspaper has researched the confusion of competences of the Federal Government. In itself, one might think that the Ministry of Defense is responsible, after all, the Bundeswehr is still in it. But because it's about migration, we also asked the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Equally wrong, because the Federal Ministry of Finance with its Federal Institute for Real Estate (Bima) is responsible for the topic.
And now there was even an answer from her. It makes people sit up and take notice on two points: On the one hand, the Bima press office emphasizes "that it has been supporting the federal states, districts and municipalities for the federal government since 2015 and even more so since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine in the initial accommodation of those seeking protection through the rent-free transfer of federal properties."
Then why not Erding? "The shelters have been empty for years. A large part of the air base is currently not available for refugee accommodation, as it has been handed over to the Federal Ministry of Defense for use by the Bundeswehr and a return to the Bima is not planned until the end of 2024," said the Bima spokesperson.

Waiting room asylum between Erding and Bockhorn - 500 places possible
Yes, then the Ministry of Defense! Not at all. According to the Ministry of Finance, the justification is tough: "The user rejects the transfer of military land due to the preparations for the return of the property."

But according to Bima, there is a glimmer of hope: On a part of the site of the Erding air base, it is currently offering the "users a property for rent-free transfer". This would mean that the city and district would – also – be in charge. Specifically, according to Bima, it is about the waiting room asylum between Erding and Bockhorn, which was shut down and partially dismantled years ago. 5000 places are possible.
Reactivation will take time
However, the Bima immediately weighs it down again: The reactivation will take some time "due to extensive preparation measures". And: The Bundeswehr would have to agree that the Free State of Bavaria would have to return the sponsorship for a shared asylum accommodation that it took over at the end of 2022. But you've never heard of it.
The Bima denies that the negative attitude could also be due to the fact that the air base could be needed again because of the tense world security situation.
Recently, Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) fired a shot at the federal government, telling it to get into the pots. The Federal Ministry of Finance says: "Nothing has arrived here." Ham
