For TV fans, there was something for every taste on Sunday evening. An action movie caused a surprise: despite the scathing reviews, it prevailed against top competitors.

Munich – Film and series lovers were spoilt for choice on Sunday (1 October): The evening was full of highlights: Sat.1 sent Agent 007 into the ratings race with "James Bond 007: Casino Royale", while the fourth season of "Babylon Berlin" ran on ARD. Sports fans, on the other hand, were able to watch the NFL on RTL. On ProSieben, on the other hand, "The Ice Road" was a real underdog – after all, the action flick was literally torn apart by critics.

Despite scathing criticism: "The Ice Road" can convince in the quota battle

In "The Ice Road", Liam Neeson goes on a rescue mission as Ice Driver Mike to rescue buried miners from a diamond mine. The action film was already shown in cinemas in 2021, but the reviews were sobering: the flick was said to lack a plot, rows and rows of clichés and boredom. However, the TV viewers were apparently not influenced by the critical voices.

As can be seen from the DWDL number center, "The Ice Road" on ProSieben was even able to prevail against its well-known competitors. With 0.58 million viewers and a rating of 1.6 percent, the action thriller won primetime among younger audiences, leaving "James Bond" behind. 007 came in a close second place with 0.53 million viewers and an 11.3 percent rating. In third place is "Babylon Berlin" on ARD with 0.52 million viewers (rating: 10.1 percent). Things went worse for the NFL game, which did not reach more than 0.37 million viewers (rate: 7.9 percent) in the course of the evening.

How is the audience actually measured?

Around 5,000 households, representative of the entire television-watching population, decide on the cancellation of a series and a new season. On April 1, 1963, the ratings were measured for the first time. Since 2016, measurements have been taken in households where the main income earner speaks German. Measurements are taken with measurement routers that collect data using audio matching methods. The measuring devices pick up sound signals from the TV and compare them with the audio patterns of the TV stations. Since the summer of 2020, some of the representative households have had new measuring devices that can be used to collect the reach of streaming offers on smart TVs.

"Babylon Berlin" beats "The Ice Road" with the overall audience

In terms of the total audience aged 3 and over, on the other hand, "Babylon Berlin" was ahead at primetime with 3.78 million viewers and a rating of 15.1 percent. But here, too, "The Ice Road" performed well: With 2.11 million viewers, the film scored 8.9 percent and thus performed better than "James Bond". This brought it to 1.49 million viewers and a rating of 6.7 percent in the total audience. However, a completely different program landed in first place among the total audience: "Inga Lindström: Einfach nur Liebe" on ZDF.

Similar to ProSieben this time with "The Ice Road", Sat.1 recently managed a surprise in terms of ratings: A film that has been shown umpteen times outclassed "Beat the Star" and "Because they don't know what's happening". Sources used: dwdl.de
