Antdorf – On the way back from Munich to their home country, four young Italians were when their Mercedes GLC suddenly began to jerk on Sunday afternoon on the A95 near Antdorf. Shortly thereafter, the engine began to rattle metallically and smoke penetrated into the passenger compartment, reports the traffic police Weilheim.
The four young men between the ages of 27 and 29 had steered their vehicle to the right onto the hard shoulder of the highway and left it immediately. "They were able to save their luggage before the vehicle started to burn in the engine compartment about three minutes later. After sighting the first flames, it took less than another three minutes and the car was on fire," the police press report said.

The volunteer fire brigades of Penzberg and Iffeldorf – with a total of eight vehicles and 48 men in action – had brought the fire that broke out between the Penzberg and Sindelsdorf junctions "quickly and professionally under control" at around 15.15 p.m. and also secured the end of the traffic jam, according to the police. Long traffic jams on the A95 motorway in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen due to closure
The A95 in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen had to be completely closed for about 45 minutes as a result of the fire. Subsequently, traffic in the left lane was diverted past the scene of the fire. Due to the high volume of traffic, according to police, a "massive backlog" formed - with a length of five to six kilometers at the peak. After almost two hours, the road was then completely reopened.
High praise from the traffic police for emergency lane
The motorists who were traveling on the highway at that time, the traffic police Weilheim paid "great praise": "The emergency lane was excellently formed and adhered to. As soon as the first vehicles react correctly and position themselves accordingly to the left and right of the two-lane road, the following vehicles follow automatically and the emergency lane becomes - for the most part - a self-runner." This means: "As one of the first vehicle drivers, you make a decisive contribution to the success of the emergency lane," said the police.
