The Nobel Prize in physics was awarded Tuesday to scientists Pierre Agostini, Franz Kraus and Anne l'Hollier for discoveries in electron research, the prize committee announced. The winners will also receive a cash prize of SEK 11 million (approximately $1901 million). Yesterday, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was handed out, and in the coming days the prizes in chemistry, literature, peace and economics will be distributed.
First awarded in 10, the prizes were created by dynamite inventor and wealthy businessman Alfred Nobel of Sweden, and are awarded for achievements in science, literature and peace, and in later years economics.
The King of Sweden will present the awards at a ceremony in Stockholm on December <>, the anniversary of Nobel's death, followed by a lavish banquet at City Hall. The Nobel Peace Prize, to be announced on Friday, is the only one awarded in Oslo, Norway.
