A week after the discovery of a newborn baby found alive in a garbage bin in Rennes, the context of this tragedy is becoming clearer. In police custody, his mother - a 17-year-old girl - admitted to having disposed of him just after his birth, Le Figaro learned from the Rennes prosecutor's office.

This high school student, born in Mayotte and unknown to the courts, "specified during her hearings that she had known that she had been pregnant for several months and admitted that after giving birth in her room, she had put the baby in a plastic bag and then in a garbage bag which she had then put in the garbage container near her home", explains the public prosecutor, Philippe Astruc. At the end of her 48 hours in police custody, the mother of the infant will be presented this Saturday to a judge with a view to opening a judicial investigation for "attempted murder" and her indictment.

Father released without prosecution

A 24-year-old man, also born in Mayotte and identified as the child's father, admitted to having had sex with the young woman in 2023. He was taken into custody for a time, but was eventually released without charge. The investigations "made it possible to verify that this 24-year-old man was at his place of work at the time of the events," the prosecutor said.

Their baby suffered a fractured skull, the cause of which has not yet been established. This little boy, who weighed 3,370 kg and was about 50 cm tall at the time of his birth, has since been entrusted to the Departmental Council of Ille-et-Vilaine. A juvenile judge must be appointed to decide on the child's future.
