In Veneto, a young man and a young woman have disappeared. The circumstances are puzzling.
Venice/ Padua - She recently lost her mother, was due to graduate from university on Thursday and there are wild theories about her ex-boyfriend: All of Italy is following the search for the missing Giulia Cecchettin and her ex-boyfriend Flippo Turetta, in a mysterious missing person case. The case has parallels with a missing person case in the United States, where Gaby Petito, also 22, disappeared without a trace in 2021, and soon after, so did her boyfriend.
As Corriere del Veneto reports, the license plate of Filippo's car was registered on Sunday at 9.07 a.m. in the Belluno area in the direction of Dobbiaco (South Tyrol). Therefore, there is the hypothesis in the Italian media that the two could have been traveling abroad together, more precisely: in the direction of Austria. However, since the two were already being searched for at the time of a possible border crossing, it was unlikely that they and their car would have crossed the border unnoticed.
Missing Giulia in Italy: "Bye, Dad, I'll see you later"
"Bye dad, I'm not coming back for dinner, we'll see you later," Giulia is said to have said on Saturday evening to meet Filippo for dinner at a shopping center. The next clue of the two, possibly: A passer-by reported to the police an argument between a couple in a parking lot near Giulia's parents' house. However, the car had already disappeared when the carabinieri arrived. It wasn't until the morning that the two were reported missing by their families.
According to Corriere del Veneto, there was soon a hypothesis from Giulia's relatives - but not from Giulia's father, but from her uncle and aunt: "Filippo was not happy that Giulia graduated because he was afraid that she might distance herself from him."
Missing couple in Italy: Giulia had probably separated in August
The relationship status of the two also seems somewhat unclear: According to the Italian media, Giulia had left her boyfriend Filippo in August, but she continued to stay with him, perhaps out of guilt. Still, the two are referred to as "ex-boyfriends" in most articles.
Filippo's father reacted very emotionally to the speculation and the descriptions in the Italian media: "My son would never have done anything to Giulia, he loved her endlessly," he said in an interview. The disappearance of Giulia and Filippo could have nothing to do with the imminent graduation. "Yes, my son was a bit possessive at times, but not in a pathological way like they describe. He was jealous, as boys of that age are, but not in a way that would worry us."
Giulia's and Filipo's families are desperate, asking the Italian public for clues. The Italian police are currently evaluating a tablet - and comparing traces of blood found not far from Giulia's childhood home with DNA samples. On Wednesday, forest workers found the remains of a man from Traunstein who had been missing for three years. (cat)
