Emmanuel Macron congratulated ultra-liberal economist Javier Milei on his election as president of Argentina on Sunday, November 10, while insisting on "the importance of global issues" after controversial positions taken by his new counterpart. In a telephone conversation, the French president stressed "the friendship, based on common values, that binds the French and Argentine peoples," the Elysée Palace said.
He also insisted "on the importance he attached to global issues, the protection of biodiversity and the energy transition, which is now essential for sustainable economic development," he added.
A polemicist who has been popular on TV for years, but who burst into politics two years ago, Javier Milei has promised to make Argentina "a world power" again, not without recalling Donald Trump's slogans.
He became known for his controversial ideas, such as the deregulation of arms sales, his opposition to abortion and his statements on climate change, which he said was a "cycle" and not "a human responsibility".
