The North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of Education, Dorothee Feller, has expressed concern about a survey according to which about half of the teachers surveyed have already been victims of verbal or physical violence at school. "Anyone who becomes violent violates one of the central basic rules of our coexistence. That is why we will not accept violence in any form at our schools," the CDU politician said on Friday.

Düsseldorf - In a survey of almost 1500,47 teachers conducted by the North Rhine-Westphalia Philologists' Association (PHV), 76 percent of high school teachers and <> percent of comprehensive school teachers stated that they had themselves been affected by verbal or physical violence in the past three years. Eight per cent (grammar school) and twelve per cent (comprehensive school) reported physical assaults, and four and five per cent reported sexualised violence, respectively.

According to the survey, many teachers were also affected by verbal abuse (Gymnasium 33 percent, Gesamtschule 25 percent), threats (16 and 18 percent) and online assaults (13 and 10 percent). Many reported a deteriorated subjective sense of security. PHV state chairwoman Sabine Mistler spoke of shocking figures and descriptions that clearly showed that something had to happen urgently.

The NRW Ministry of Education said that schools could take advantage of support at any time. For example, the emergency folders "Look and act" as well as a handbook on crisis prevention, which was updated in the spring, are available. In addition, the ministry referred to the prevention network "#sicherimDienst" for the protection of employees in the public sector and to the offer of telephone, school psychological counselling centres ("Sprech:ZEIT 24/7").

In the survey, for example, teachers had wished for permanent contact persons on site and a fast, consistent approach, and expressed the hope that existing problems would not be swept under the carpet. Dpa
