A few days after the discovery of a weapon in the possession of a suspected right-wing extremist, the young man is in custody. He is said to have threatened violence in forums. An attack plan was "consistently" prevented in the early stages, says the Hessian interior minister.

Frankfurt/Main - An 18-year-old suspected right-wing extremist from Hesse is suspected of having planned a possible attack. The man was taken into custody, the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office and the Hessian State Criminal Police Office (LKA) in Wiesbaden announced on Monday. "The security authorities have consistently prevented an attack plan in the early stages with professional investigative work," said Hesse's Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU).

According to the LKA and the public prosecutor's office, the accused from the Limburg-Weilburg district is suspected of having prepared a "serious act of violence endangering the state". According to previous investigations, the man has a "solidified violent, anti-Semitic and right-wing extremist basic attitude," it continued. "The 18-year-old had threatened several times in relevant forums that he wanted to kill people as part of the pursuit of his political goals." He is also suspected of violating the Weapons Act.

The investigations against the 18-year-old have been going on for several months, according to the information. He is accused of "preparing an attack on the lives of others," the investigating authorities explained. The Hessian police had searched the living quarters of the accused on November 15. Numerous digital storage media such as computers, mobile phones, weapons and ammunition were seized. On 16 November, a juvenile judge at the Frankfurt District Court ordered pre-trial detention.

"Initial evaluations of the search corroborated the suspicion of the crime," the investigating authorities announced. "Further evaluation as well as the weapons law investigation are ongoing." Further questions, such as about possible accomplices or a network, were not answered by the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office.

Officers from the State Office of Criminal Investigation, the police headquarters in Frankfurt, southern Hesse and western Hesse as well as a special task force were involved in the measures taken so far. According to the LKA, the arrest is an investigative success of the Special Reconstruction Organisation (BAO) Hessen R. With this organization, the Hessian police are taking targeted action against right-wing extremism.

In recent years, Hesse has been shaken several times by sensational acts of violence that had a racist or right-wing extremist background. In June 2019, Kassel District President Walter Lübcke was murdered by a right-wing extremist on the terrace of his home in Wolfhagen in northern Hesse. In February 2020, a German perpetrator shot and killed nine young people in Hanau for racist motives. After that, he killed his mother and himself. In May 2023, a 21-year-old suspected right-wing extremist from northern Hesse was sentenced to a juvenile sentence of three years and ten months by the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court. He is said to have planned a terrorist attack with homemade explosive devices and also tried to found a terrorist organization.

In its report for 2022, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution lists Hesse with 50 acts of violence motivated by right-wing extremism. In a comparison of the federal states, this means 10th place in terms of absolute figures. In terms of population figures, Hesse is in 5th place in the ranking of the federal states. dpa
