The night is cool and superbly starry. It's migration time, and a flock of common cranes cracks through the low-flying sky. On the sandy, dry land of the Bachka, a historic region of the Kingdom of Hungary that today straddles Hungary and Serbia. Sandor (Alexandre) runs the beam of his Mag-Lite flashlight over the two rows of chain-link fences topped with barbed wire with razor blades, and over a watchtower erected between them. Built from the summer of 2015 to block the "Balkan route", the obstacle stretches along the 175-kilometre border between Hungary and Serbia, which is also the external border of the Schengen area.
