Thomas Gottschalk has distanced himself from the "Wetten, dass..?" stage. But what does the presenter earn in an evening on stage?

Mainz – Secret documents are now being disclosed. On November 25, 2023, Thomas Gottschalk (73) said goodbye forever to the "Wetten, dass..?" -Stage. The presenter was driven out of the studio on a huge excavator – and thus said "goodbye" in memory of legendary bets. For his appearances, the TV star is likely to have been paid handsomely by ZDF over the years. But how much money did the broadcaster really pay him?

With a few slips of the tongue, Thomas Gottschalk caused laughter on the net on Saturday evening. This is how Matthias Schweighöfer (42) became a winner at the "Wetten, dass..?" -Couch without further ado "Matthias Schweinsteiger". But the mishap in front of the camera forgave the presenter both his guests and the audience at home. After all, the 73-year-old has been providing entertainment on the ZDF show since 1987. How much money will Thomas Gottschalk make on a "Wetten, dass..?" evening, has been a well-kept secret so far. However, the Bild newspaper has a contract that shows his first fee.

The 36-year-old document records all of Thomas Gottschalk's ZDF assignments in 1987. Four episodes of "Wetten, dass..?" are also part of it. For a broadcast time of 105 minutes, the entertainer was paid 100,000 DM (about 51,000 euros), according to the document. The contract is dated a date in November – so it refers retroactively to the entire year. At that time, Gottschalk already had two "Wetten, dass..?" broadcasts.

The craziest bets on "Wetten, dass..?"

Since the first episode of "Wetten, dass..?" flickered across the screens on February 14, 1981, the TV studio has become the venue for some bizarre and baffling bets. In 1988, Thomas Rautenberg claimed that he could recognize the color of crayons by smelling them and even succeeded in doing so – which, of course, was completely cheating. In 1997, Nico Haddad managed to extinguish a burning hut with only blowing out and five liters of water. In 2007, Gerhard Donie managed to place 20 pawns on the backs of 10 men by throwing them. In the latest episode of the crowd favorite, there are likely to be many exciting betting projects at the start.

"Bet that..?" -Conditions: That was in Thomas Gottschalk's first contract

Attentive fans are likely to be suspicious of the contract - because the fee refers to an exact number of broadcast minutes in all broadcasts. Over the years, however, Thomas Gottschalk has never finished "Wetten, dass..?" on time. Often, the show was extended by almost half, so that all other program items had to be pushed back significantly. Gottschalk's hourly wage is therefore likely to have decreased significantly. He was paid 225,000 marks (about 115,00 euros) for all the formats listed in the contract.

However, it is unclear what happened to the presenter in terms of salary after the first two years. "The contracting parties shall declare by 30.06.1988 whether they wish to continue the contract after 31.12.1988. If so, this framework agreement will be extended for another year," the old contract reads. Accordingly, the conditions could have changed as early as the following year. The last show was worthwhile for Gottschalk and ZDF: "Wetten, dass..?" secured dream ratings. Sources used: bild.de
